We were taken aback—and unbelievably saddened—when we heard the news yesterday morning.
Perry was a wonderful, courageous, and gentle man. Not only was he creatively gifted, but his knowledge of politics, the economy, and so many other fields was astonishing. He was first and foremost a citizen of Jamaica, but he was also a citizen of the world.
We feel extremely privileged to have spent time with him when we were in Treasure Beach in October—and had no idea it would be the last time we would see him.
Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all the members of his family as well as all the others who knew and loved him.
Rest in peace, Perry. This world was fortunate to have had you for as long as you were here. Your spirit and your many accomplishments are indelible.
With much respect,
Karen and Peter Kennedy
I'd like to add my condolences to all the Henzell family, as well as the peoples of Jamaican and all nations who were touched by his work.
Here's a list of news articles that Google has today including a report about the Jamaican premiere today of his film No Place Like Home.
RIP, Perry.

Just my brief moments around Perry, you could feel a "kinship", a stirring of personal or "lost" histories, diasporas, wanderings of mind, body and soul...Whatever flavours, complexities -honed simple- of justice, freedoms & fairness that were infused on his journey, he left scattered, hidden or golden like pumpkin blossoms ever to be unearthed. How many pilgrims did he take under his wings to be enlightened by the spectral light he could shine on the obscure?...How often was a literary, cinematic, terrestial, romantic surprise reflected in his syn-ergy.
I would imagine, that there is a mystic feel for a "place", endowed & sanctified, so fitting for the miraculous resurrection
of his last "movie-ing" gift, No Place Like Home, perhaps reflected in a Celtic song I rediscovered not so long ago, on a Cornish coast ,likely revived with a Jam-beat.....
I wish I was in Carrickfergus
only for nights in Ballygran
I would swim over the deepest ocean,
the deepest ocean for my love to find.
But the sea is wide and I can't swim over,
and neither have I wings to fly.
If I could find me a Teddy boatman
to ferry me over to my love and die.
My childhood days bring back longing reflections
of happy days I spent so long ago.
Some boyhood friends and some relations
have passed on now like melting snow.
But I will spend my days in endless roaming
soft sit the grass my bed is free.
Ah to be back in Carrickfergus
on that long road down to the sea.
And in Kilkenny it is reported
there are marble stones as black as ink.
With gold and silver I would support her,
but I'll sing no more till I get a drink.
I've drunk today and yet I'm sober
a handsome rover from town to town.
Ah, but I'm sick now, my days are numbered
so come all you lovies and lay me down.
LIVE ON HANDSOME ROVER....Zed
