This is the most difficult thing we have ever had to post here. We are unbelievably saddened to announce the passing of Miss Verlin this morning.

She was the first person we met when we came to Treasure Beach more than 25 years ago--and the reason we fell in love with Treasure Beach, returned time and time again, and chose to become a part of the community.

We knew no kinder, more generous, wiser, and more loving person than Miss Verlin. She was the personification of all that is good in this world.

She leaves eight children--Laura, Bev, Richard, Len, Everett, Everton, Conroy, and Calvin--and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren--and too many friends to count.

We know she is finally at peace and with her Lord--her late husband, Endley, and her beloved daughter, Laverne.

I will miss your sweet sweet smile Miss Verlin.

As I sit here and think of all the good things I remember about Miss Verlin I think her daughter Laura summed it up best when I saw her earlier. She said, "She was the best mother anyone could ever dream of having." There is no better tribute.

My sympathies to the family and large array of friends of Miss Verlin. May she rest in peace.

Here is the Profile of the Month with Miss Verlin as the subject from May of 2003.

Verlin Parchment, May, 2003

My heart is heavy with sadness. Miss Verlin was the soul of Treasure Beach, always cheerful, kind, wise and loving. My prayers go out to her wonderful family. I am very grateful to have known her. She has touched so many lives and made a difference. I shall always hold her smiling eyes in my heart.

We have known Miss Verlin more than three decades, and have admired, through all those years, her wonderful spirit. She lives on in the children and grandchildren whom she nurtured and sustained. A wonderful legacy, but Billy's Bay will be a lesser place without her. There is some comfort knowing she at last joins her late husband Endley, another of the special people of Treasure Beach.

Its only been a few seconds but seems like an eternity to me.
I miss my Grandma Verlin already and I wish she had stayed here with me.

Its only been a few minutes but a million tears I have shed.
I long to hear her voice say my name and hold my hand as she always had.

Its only been a few hours but my heart aches so bad.
I know she would say ...Karen stop the crying,it's alright, don't be so sad.

Its only been a few hours but I sit and wonder
if she knew I was there and how much I really cared.

Its only been a day but I still wonder why?
Why Grandma didn't stay for me I didnt' want to say goodbye

Its only been a day but I smile and i cry
when I think about the 20 years Grandma Verlin and I shared.
SHe was a hero, a one of a kind mother, a grandma and a friend. She was the strength of the family and will be missed many. Grandma I Love you and Miss you.

Karen

We're very saddened to hear this morning of Miss Verlin's passing. We only got to meet her once--in 2009 on our first visit to TB. Her smiling face was the very first thing we saw every morning there...making coffee for us and always so sweet. We'll be back next year, but it will never be the same. Our deepest and sincerest sympathies to Miss Verlin's family and friends on such a great loss. We're sure she is now enjoying the rest and peace she deserves. What an amazing woman Miss Verlin was. The world would be richer if it contained more unselfish people like Miss Verlin. What a beautiful tribute by the Kennedys. What a wonderful poem from her granddaughter.

For all the family of Miss Verlin ... she touched the heart of every single person who met her. God put her on earth as an example of how we should all live our lives. To be kind and gentle, caring and loving .. her eyes looked into your soul and wanted you to be the best person you could be. She set the example. And now she is with Endley and Laverne and awaits us all with open arms. To Karen and Peter who loved her and to Karen Parchement and all the family .. our deepest sympathies.

My heart is saddened, my eyes are filled with tears with the passing of Miss Verlin. She is one of the most wonderful and honest person that had ever lived.

I can remember 35 years ago when I was a young lady growing up, I was struggling to iron a pair of pants and she was there just looking at me like she just wanted to take the pants and iron it for me, all of a sudden she said "baby that's not how you do it, let me show you how". And from that moment until now I have been ironing in Miss Verlin's easy way, I just want to say thank you again.

I'm so glad I got to see and talk to her last year when I was there, she will truly be missed. There will surely be a void in Billy's Bay without you there, a void that can never be filled.

Miss Verlin's fifth generation will inherit her legacy that she has left behind. Happy Mother's Day Miss Verlin, you must be having a wonderful time with the angels in heaven, I can only imagine how happy they are to have someone like you.

My condolense goes outto all her wonderful children, grandchildren, and great grands....Karen, my neice you broke my heart with your words, be strong my dear and be of good courage, just remember all the good times you had with your grandmother, we will see her again.

A thousand times we needed her
A thousand times we cried
If love alone could have saved her
she never would have died
A heart of gold stopped beating
two twinkling eyes closed to rest
God broke our hearts to prove he only took the best
never a day will go by that you will not be in our heart and soul.
Love you Miss Verlin, Precious soul rest in peace.

Heartfelt condolences to Miss Verlin's children, grandchildren and other family members. You have lost a very special person, her death has saddened me tremendously. I admired Miss Verlin's love, friendship and sincerity. Miss Verlin was very humble but strong. She was admired and respectful in her community. She was a devoted mother and nurtured many. Miss Verlin's life was full of kindly deeds and a helping hand to those in need of love, support and guidance. Thank God to have had such a person in your lives. I know her parting has left a void, fill it with remembered joy. I know your heartache I know your pain as you say farewell to your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, relative, and my dear frind. May the treasure of her beautiful memories give you strength.
Jennifer and Margaret express their condolences. They speak of her kind and gentle soul and her cheerful smile.
A golden heart has stopped beating, hard working hands at rest.
"We cannot Lord thy purpose see but all is well that's done by thee."
Cherish her memories.
May her soul rest in peace.

It is with a sad and broken heart, and eyes filled with tears, that I am writing this message. words is not enough for me to convey the way Iam feeling, and for the way I have felt since I got the news that miss Verlin was very sick. If tears could have stop her from dying she still would be here. Miss Verlin was everything to Billy's Bay. Through every wedding she and her husband Enly[Cas] would be there coooking the most delicious curry goat and manish water you would want to have. If someone got sick miss Verlin would be there with her special touch annd her home remedy to get you better.Through sickness and death she and her husband would be the first to come to help out. working themselves to exaustion, all for free.Everyone was welcome at her door, no one was ever turned away wheather you were family or stranger. She would give away the last shirt on her back. Billy's Bay without Miss Verlin will never be the same. That oh so welcoming smile I shall never for get. Rubbing my face with both of her hands, like only a loving mother could. She was like a second mother to me and to countless others. Going home will never be the same anymore. This is such a terrible loss for the community, but Heaven could not have gained a more special and precious Angel. Iam sure she will be looking out for us even more.Miss Verlin you will surely be missed by everyone who have had the chance of meeting you, but your loved ones who have gone on before is happy to have you with them. My heart goes out to all her children and grandchildren.Sorry we cant be there with you all.Miss Verlin was very special to us, its really sad to see her go.

It has taken me a few days to post this message because it is more than difficult to put into words how I and my family felt about Miss Verlin. Very occasionally in life, if you are exceedingly lucky, you get to know a person who is inspirational enough to make you question your own values. Miss Verlin was completely selfless and lived to make good the lives of those around her. Her love for her family was boundless, and that love spilled over to her friends, including those she looked after so devotedly at Rainbow Tree.

My family and I will always have a very, very deep affection for Miss Verlin and she will be a lifelong memory and positive influence on us. She has given us a legacy of kindness, humility, warmth, generosity and more. She will be missed so, so much.

Our deepest condolences go to Miss Verlin’s family and friends. We have all been so very privileged to know her.

Milt and I were so sorry to receive word from Tompa and Jessame about the passing of Miss Verlin. Everything everyone has said about her in these condolences is true and more. Not only is she an icon of Billy's Bay, but she was a warm, friendly and caring human being. To me and Milt, always a smile given as we walked on the road...always a conversation to make sure everything was alright....always that little laugh of hers if we said something she found amusing. To her family , friends and admirers, our most sincere condolences. It's at times like this that we hold even more precious the elders of the community. Please tell them what they mean to you.

Where do I start ? Oh Miss Verlin you are so sweet, so sweet , you had the brightest smile light up Billy's Bay, so bright that whenever there's a power cut (which was often) you shine soooo bright.
Every child is your "baby" matters not if it's the first time yu bless yu eyes upon the child.
You delivered me only 10yrs ago (well). Talk about Jill of all trade that was you. A listening ear, lending a hand ( I often wonder if you had any hands left because yu len dem out too much) giving sound advice ,a midwife (delivering more than half the Billy's Bay population), kind too kind often going without (because yu give whatever you had to da pickney de) , I could go on and on.

Bev, Calvin, Everton, Len, Conroy, Everrett,Ozzy and Laura I share your pain for Miss Verlin was not only yours , she was mine too and I bet half of Billy's Bay will say the same.

I love you Miss Verlin and am very glad to have known you, your smile will only shine brighter.

i remember one night mamma had cooked dinner and four of us did not eat dinner. There were four fishermen missing from Rocky Point and had found themselves in Billys Bay. I remember plain as it was yesterday when Mama took the four men home and gave them our dinner. she gave the rest of bread and sugar water and said to us eat and god will bless you. i will never in my life be able to meet or greet another woman as kind hearted, loving an caring as my mother. Mama you are in a better place and i miss you so much. i know you will help me realise that i will see you again and its just time that will tell. i love you.

Lovely story, Len. What you said reminds me so much about how Miss Verlin lived her life--and the lessons she taught to all of us. You were wonderful to your Mother, and we all knew it--and she knew it, and she appreciated all you did for her. (I will never again joke you about determining the sex of a pig.)

I am sitting here well after my bed time yet I cannot get the thoughts of Miss Verlin out of my head. I have decided this is good because I never want to forget her. I know her family realizes how fortunate they were to have had her. I know the community realizes how wonderful it was to have such a good neighbor and friend. As someone she took care of, I well understand how fortunate my family and I were to have known her. Rest in peace, dear lady.

Are there any reports about Miss Verlin's funeral from someone who attended? I am hoping it was as lovely as she was and regret we could not make the trip over to honour her.

I am happy to report it was as lovely as she was. Many, many attended, the church overflowing to several surrounding yards which was a tribute to how much she was loved and respected. Several tributes given by family and friends and Pastor Bent's message was heartfelt and true to the way Miss Verlin lived her life speaking of the lack of value in material things and how one lives their life is of most value.

One highlight of the service for me was when about 12 of Miss Verlin's grandchildren sang "Wind Beneath My Wings". Their voices are so beautiful and with the harmonizing they sounded like a professional choir. While they were singing and other grandchildren were playing the instruments I couldn't help but think how many incredible voices and how much inspired music Miss Verlin had a hand in creating. I don't think there were many dry eyes in the congregation when they completed that song.

Another highlight for me was Rohan James' delivery of the eulogy. He drew us a picture of her life with his words that was spot on and very moving ending with an absolutely beautiful song explaining that it is the first time being home but being so homesick because she is no longer there.

A sea of people filling up the entire street escorted Miss Verlin on her last walk down the road to her home where she was laid to rest. Truly a beautiful service for a beautiful person.

We want to express our deepest condolences to the Parchment family. Words seem so inadequate at a time like this. We can only imagine the grief and sorrow they are feeling. You are in our thoughts today and in the days ahead. We had the pleasure of meeting Miss Verlin when we stayed at Rainbow Tree November 2008. We had just recently lost our 17 year old son, Miss Verlin and her family took care of us helped us heal and gave us hope. I hope the Parchment family finds peace.
She truly was an amazing lady!
