In my days, tonight would be the first night sleeping on the mattress made from calico bags that was bought and washed after the shop keeper had emptied all the flour, stuffed with dried Seymour Grass. Yeah, those days that was our queen mattress.

Everybody would have had their Christmas cake, sorrel, meat and hand-bun ready for Christmas. Fe-fe, chi bomb, balloon, mouth organ, star lights fire crackers created a mix of sound, fun and frolic in the community as kids had their merry makings.

Nature always provide an awesome setting with the blossom of trees;shades of yellow, white and red decorated the environs and the gentle Christmas breeze added a special sense of peace and tranquility.

Kids never forget that its time for the rolling calf to walk at nights.

Just saying the words "mouth organ" brings back such sweet memories of my dad, Cecil Clarke, number one mouth organ player and leader of the children march on Christmas morning. Rest in peace, dear dad.

From where to where did this march take place? I can't seem to remember seeing or hearing it. How early in the morning was it?

Many of you may not remember but the march actually started in the early 50s before my father migrated to England. It started at Sinners Bench at about 5 a.m. and concluded at Frenchman Beach when the sun came up. Along the way we would stop at any home that had a light on where we would be served bun and coffee (yes, children were given coffee even back in those days.) By the way, the marchers consisted of not more than 12 to 15 children. Thanks for letting me share these memories, those were good times in a child,s mind .

Ok. Thank you Leonard, that explains why I have no recollection of it.
