I first came to Jamaica in 1973 when Negril was just a fishing village. I have been back 20 times, mostly with my kids and wife during their mid winter break in February. Negril is no fun anymore. It has become too loud, there is a never ending hustle to buy everything and the vibe is very hostile. How does Treasure Bay compare? I have no interest in an all inclusive environment and am looking for a relaxing time...ron
We started coming to Jamaica in the early 80's and now Treasure Beach is always our destination. Treasure Beach is very community oriented with virtually no hastles. Prices are inexpensive compared to Negril and the people are fantastic. We consider Treasure Beach our second home. The beaches are tan colored sand but every bit as nice and without a whole lot of people and no hastle(not unusual to share a beach with a few people, often none, as opposed to hundreds in any one part of Negril's long beach. Not a tourist trap with parasailing, jet skis, or even beach chairs (instead spend time out of the sun with very friendly Jamaicans with small places selling drinks, fruit, and sometimes some of the best fish on the island). Be forewarned...this is a laid back community as advertised, where you can meet not only Jamaicans but people from all over the world who share a similar philosophy. Safety has never been an issue nor is price gauging the tourists. This web-site very accurately describes Treasure Beach.

you will not want to go back to Negril once you've been to Treasure Beach..its what the real Jamaica is about....ya mon!
We're in TB right now. This is our first trip to the south coast, we've been coming to Jamaica since '88. We used to stay in Orocabessa before James Bond Beach came in. We've spend a lot of time in Negril as well... and I still like Negril. This place has the same vib as used to be in Orocabessa; the people I've met so far have been very laid back and friendly and the place is beautiful with seas a bit wilder than the north coast, and the town just quiet enough. There is night life, maybe 4 or 5 bars. The resorts we've visited have all been happy to have us have a beer or food and enjoy the grounds. The food here has been first rate, everywhere we've eaten. Even at Jakes the food was reasonably priced. The fish is so, so good and Jack Spratt's makes a thin crust pizza that is as good as you'd get in Brooklyn or North End in Boston. We'll be here a bit more that two more weeks and I'm looking forward to every day. Tourism is a bit slow in Jamaica right now, so it's a good time to come if you can.
Treasure Beach feels like home, where as Negril is a place you may visit for a couple days(for the white sand and calm water).
I have lots of pretty pictures of the area.

Everyone knows how I feel about Treasure Beach, but I have to put in my 2 cents anyway.
To me, Treasure Beach is one of "The Last Frontiers" By this I mean, it is one of the very few magnificently beautiful places left that is still in it's natural state. Natural state meaning the people and the natural setting. They compliment each other. Forget my Bias and take this account into consideration.
As recently as Last week, I took 2 very good friendsfrom Michigan to Jamaica to attend Jazz & Blue Festival. During the visit however, I decided to show off my country. I took them to Ocho Rios for 2 days, Montego Bay for 1 day, Negril for 1 day and treasure Beach for 1 day.
At Treasure Beach we visited Lover's Leap and spent a few Hours at The Blue Marlin Villa to view the sunset.
The verdict came in on our way back on Air Jamaica, both of them said to me. When we come back to Jamaica, we definately want to spend the entire vacation in Treasure Beach. This was a neutral opinion and one that I share wholeheartedly. My message to treasure Beach. "Do not change either your geography and most important of all, do not change the attitude of your citizens. That is what I as well as many other first commers to the area cherish the most about this beautiful area. Thanks for allowing my 2 cents.
Every day I'm here I'm a bit more grateful. We went to Black River to buy a few necessities today and we couldn't wait to return to TB. When we got back to town the wind was blowing, the sea was up and although the sun was blazing, it was very comfortable. Tonight I ate at Button Bay and had the best curried goat I've ever eaten. This is a sweet place in the world.
Yay for you Togus! It is the sweetest place in the world.
Can't wait 'til you post your pics
Hi Kelly, we have lots an lots of pictures. When we get back to home (and our DSL connection)in March I'll sort through them and upload a bunch. We finally heard back from our friend, Wayne, who lives up in Grange Hill... he drove us here from MoBay. He's coming in to visit us on Friday and he's not familiar with TB (he spends most of his time in the hills or Negril)and I can't wait to hit some local spots with him. Tonight, maybe Pardy's or Jack Spratt's...gotta love that brown stew fish...Or maybe Eggy's for a Red Stripe first.
OK I couldn't take it any more. I changed the name of this thread from '... Treasure Bay' to '...Treasure Beach'

Thanks Eric!
I agree with everything here except that the pizza at Jack Sprat is as good as pizza in Brooklyn or Boston North End. The pizza is good but c'mon mon! Must be the view clouding your taste buds. I highly recommend the jerk sausage but it's no where close to pizza in the northeast US.

I have to agree.
My husband (from TB) said Blossom's pizza is better. I have never had it.
The sun and the fresh herbs can put the zap on your judgement here, but I stand by my earlier posting. We first had pizza at Jack's with our new friend Andrea who grew up on Long Island and moved to Brooklyn; she's the one who offered the comparison to New York pie...we're from Maine, have sons we visit often in Boston and that's where the North End comparison comes in. However, I haven't found Ricotta Pie like you find at the Modern Bakery on Hanover Street (much better than Mike's across the street). Regardless, the main point is that the food in TB is as good as anything I've had in Negril or Oche or MoBay and the prices are very reasonable. Perhaps I should have saved my praise for the fish in TB, I think everyone will agree that the fish here is top shelf all the way!
And don't forget the jerk... both pork and chicken are excellent no matter where you go.
Mi starvin and there is cold snow all around me and I haven't seen the sun for a long time. I can hardly wait to get there in March. TB has the best sun and food and people and Jamaican vibes. I'm homesick Jeanie
