I was searching the web an came across a couple of articles that state that Breds is Treasure Beach Foundation. Are they one in the same? I know that Bred's was founded by Jason. Is Treasure Beach Foundation the registered non-profit for Breds or is Breds also a registered nonprofit?
The two are actually different registered non-profit organizations in Treasure Beach, though they do collaborate on projects from time to time (such as the Dean Relief Fund).
The full title of Breds is "Breds: The Treasure Beach Foundation" which was founded by Mr. Jason Henzell and Mr. Aaron Laufer. But people say Breds for short.
The "Treasure Beach Foundation" is a totally separate organization which was founded by Mrs. Karren Kennedy.
So thats Breds: The Treasure Beach Foundation and The Treasure Beach Foundation...two separate non-profit organizations.
Hope this clears up the confusion.
I believe BREDS was founded by Rebecca.
Treasure Beach Foundation (no "The" at the beginning) is a U.S.-based non-profit foundation -- officially a 501 (c) (3) in the U.S. That means all donations to it are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law in the U.S. It also means that we must adhere to very strict standards in terms of how donations are used and how our accounting is done, as the IRS "looks over our shoulder." The books of U.S. non-profits are open for public inspection. One thing any donor should always be aware of is not only how the funds are utilized but what percentage of them goes to overhead, and what percentage actually is used directly to benefit the recipients.
When Jason Henzell formed BREDS, I was unaware that the longer (official) name for it was BREDS - The Treasure Beach Foundation. If so, my U.S. non-profit would definitely have had a different name because this has subsequently led to all sorts of confusion.
While BREDS (Jamaica) and Treasure Beach Foundation (U.S.) cooperate on some matters (e.g., raising money for Hurricane Dean relief), the two organizations are not officially related.
Treasure Beach Foudations's primary function is education in the Treasre Beach area. Almost all our money is used for scholarships, awarded annually.
I do not know enough about Jamaican foundations to explain anything about the status of BREDS. However, I believe other readers of TB.net do -- and invite them to share their knowledge.
Thanks to all of you networkers of goodwill.
Rebecca did not found Breds. She and Eric founded www.TreasureBeach.net. I think they have also helped collect money for people affected by Hurricane Dean.
Karen and Treasure, Thank you for the explanation. It has helped to clear up some of the confusion for me.
