I am writing this a bit bleary eyed this morning after dancing up a storm last night at the first night of the 2nd Annual Jazz Festival held at Sunset Resort.

What a great night, with the stage set up right in front of the sea, we enjoyed the music of Dollyman and The Blessed band out of Negril followed up by Byard Lancaster & The Randy Lippincott Blues Band.

As I am writing this, I am listening to a CD by The Randy Lippincott Blues Band and my feet are (albeit sore) still tapping away.

I promise not to forget the camera tonight so I can share this experience with all of you tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing Babara Walker join the rest of the entertainers tonight.

Kudos to all who helped in putting this great event together.

It is difficult to find the correct words for the Jazz Festival. A truly spectacular event! The food and drink were extremely reasonable, the atmosphere and setting were wonderful and the entertainment was first class all the way. Too bad the local population did not support this event.

Hopefully, word will spread to surrounding communities that this event is worth their time, worth the drive and absolutely worth the price of admission.

Kory and his staff did a great job!

What does "Too bad the local population did not support this event" mean, and how much was the admission?

As promised I have some photos from the Jazz Festival held Friday and Saturday night at Sunset Resort. It was such a magical experience to be sitting on the deck at Sunset Resort overlooking the sea and being entertained by such quality musicians listening to great jazz and blues!

Both Friday and Saturday night's entertainment started with the great reggae sounds of Dollyman and the Blessed Band. You can find them playing at Rick's Cafe in Negril most nights, so we were happy to have them for the weekend!

blessed

After Dollyman and the Blessed Band did a superb job of warming up the crowd, the fabulous jazz vocalist Pam Hall and her band took the stage. We were treated to Jamaican jazz at its best!

Then back on the stage after performing for us on Friday as well were The Randy Lippincott Band and their great Blues music.

The big hit from the band was Joe, their harmonica player! Joe burned up the stage with his harmonica playing and his infectious vibe!

While on stage performing, the band was joined by the great Byard Lancaster who treated us to a variety of sounds!

But the house caught on fire when Barbara Walker came on stage. Whew, what a performance! Miss Walker had everyone tapping out the beat to her boisterous blues ensamble.

The highlight of which was a medley of the late great Ray Charles music and taking her microphone through the audience having people singing, "The Blues are all right". Even Miss Zane had her Blues debut on that microphone!

Everyone was on their feet by the end of the night.

Quest was so infected by the beat, he was on stage dancing away!

And just as the show finished, we had a sprinkling of rain. Many said that was the final blessing on a perfect night!

Once again we need to thank Kory South and the crew at Sunset Resort all who worked diligently and hard throughout the weekend.

We would also like to thank Southern Supplies and Services for the sound system and Roger and Kevin James for spinning the tunes. They kept the vibe going before the show started, while the sets were changing and after the show finished. The tune selection was well choosen considering the event. Special thanks also go to Kevin Mills for transporting the band back to Ocho Rios early Sunday morning!

Of course, the sponsors need to be thanked, because without them, this event would not be possible.

As far as the comment of local support, many who attended this festival were exposed to Blues and Jazz for the first time, especially in a live performance. My opinion is as the word gets out on how good this music is, we will receive more local support. This is a great reason why this festival is so important to have here, so that more people can be exposed to a variety of music.

This is also the hope and dream of the founders of the Jazz Festival. The same performers, who are based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, performed for us this weekend and performed in Ocho Rios and Kingston during the past week. Byard Lancaster who is based in Philidelphia, along with Sony Bradshaw based here in Jamaica have been working on this for many years. Mr. Lancaster has taken the Blues and Jazz into many Jamaican schools putting on free performances exposing children to this style. Mr. Lancaster is taking this further by putting together videos and workshops to be brought to the schools teaching children of the many job opportunities affiliated with the music industry other than just being the entertainer. We wish them all the best in this venture and for the continued success of the Jamaica Jazz Festival!
