The 9th annual Jake’s Off Road Triathlon was held on Sunday, May 2nd in Treasure Beach. This year’s event was a huge success with over 80 participants from all over Jamaica.
The Triathlon is the largest yearly fundraiser for Breds, the Treasure Beach Foundation, a local non-profit community development group promoting education, sports, cultural heritage, environmental awareness, and health in Treasure Beach. The most recent project is the completion of an addition on the Sandy Bank Primary School, comprised of two classrooms, a computer lab, library and eight bathrooms.
Coming in first place for the men was Jasette Bromfield, from Treasure Beach, who completed the 500 M swim, 25 K mountain bike ride, and 7 K cross country run in 1 hour, 19 minutes, 17 seconds. He won a Cannondale Mountain Bike, an Air Jamaica Express ticket to any Caribbean destination, and a Nike shirt.
Bobby Barnes, who came in at 1 hour 28 minutes and 9 seconds, won second place. Third place, Patrick Lee, came in at 1 hour, 32 minutes and 5 seconds.
Rachel Herould from Kingston captured first place for the women. Her award was a weekend for two at Swept Away and a Nike watch. She completed the course in 1 hour, 49 minutes, and 39 seconds. Second place was won by United States Peace Corps Volunteer Megan Feeney, coming in at 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 23 seconds. Third place, Diana Throburu, completed the course in 2 hours and 1 minute.
Coming in first for the relay were Kingstonians Alan Beckford, Carlton Simmonds, and Horace Burvey at 1 hour 18 minutes. Each team member received Digicel phones.

The Triathlon has gained worldwide exposure from articles appearing in Women’s Health and Fitness magazines. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the event, and it holds promise to be the most successful Triathlon yet.
Congratulations, BREDS, on another successful event.
Congratulations to all who participated and helped organize this event! What an amazing accomplishment!
