a number of crocodiles have recently been sighted (and for the most part captured and sent off to who knows where) by residents. the most recent one captured was today in old wharf area.
it is alarming though how many people feel they should be killed, instead of realizing that it is because of us humans moving into their territory why they now cannot find their way to water or wherever they naturally go.
yes i know its pretty intimidating to know crocs are around, but they are around! that is a fact, not fiction.
so lets not "hide" this from either residents or tourists, but
let us try and live with them.
they ARE a protected species.

Live with them where?
Where exactly in Old Wharf are these crocs sighted?
The Black River Safari is waiting with open arms,so get them in "them there waters".
Please be safe, the water is their home so we have to be on the look-out for them.
I live in Florida and some mornings when I opened my patio shutters my eyes would be looking all around to see if there was one or two basking in the sun on this huge log in the canal.
That is there home, we just have to make sure they do not stray into our back yard or our pool.
A good fence is always an option.
I have since moved from that home but, not because of fear of a croc.

Crazy. Sign of the times. Please don't kill them, relocate them. They have a right to life and are a part of that connectedness of life.

we (humans) build walls and homes in places which prevent the crocodiles from going on their natural pathways to and from water, and then freak out when one is seen in "the 'hood".

why can't we think things out more sensibly?
after all, it is us humans that were given brains, yet we seem to be making it so hard for nature and animals to survive.

turtles, crocodiles etc deserve to live in thier natural habitat.
and it is us that could learn so much from them ..

Good point by learn from nature. Just remember that only one or two generations ago there were still people in TB eating turtle meat, and few knew about the threat of extinction. Now that this generation is aware, it is up to us to teach our peers and the youngsters about saving these reptiles.

You can only buy monkey business in TB. Gimme a break Concerned Citizen. Either you are joking or are willing to buy snow in Alaska.
Anyway, nuff foolishness...
What is the protection status of the freshwater turtles and what is their abundance?

Yeah, we weren't sure if you were joking or serious. Please clarify what you meant by this statement Concerned Citizen

That would not shock me. Birds come in from Honduras.
Why not monkey?

Turtles and crocodiles are protected by law in Jamaica and anyone caught say disturbing a nest or capturing one of these creatures without the proper permits will be heavily fined.

I can't believe that we are even discussing monkey meat in TB. Yes 'nosy parker' birds do indeed come from Honduras, as pets not to eat. Elephants and hippopotomus come from Africa, but I have not seen the elephants in Crossroads, not the hippos in Great Pond. Any sightings anyone?
I thought that we did not print rumors. Could we verify the rediculous claim by 'concerned citizen' before printing any more of these claims?

This monkey meat thing is either a lie or it is disgusting. I agree with mnkn: This should be verified or not printed. If not the next thing we'll read about here is eyeball soup or bras made of mongoose.

We agree, especially since we hesitated to approve the original message. Nothing else will be posted about monkey meat unless facts are brought foward and not just hearsay.

If a species is endangered and a person sees it offered on a menu, who do you contact in Jamaica, what can be done?

We got sidetracked here with the talk of eating our nearest relative,....amyway...
Turtles...fresh water turtles...are they protected in Jamaica as sea turtles are? Maybe Diana (JET)can answer that?
If they are not, is it possible that the turtle being offered for consumption is freshwater turtles?? Look forward to some education here, as I am ignorant on this issue..
