We are planning a stay in TB end of May -
and would like to know off what bay is the Pelican Bar and how far off the shore and...how deep is the water )
Tks
I am told it is about a mile off shore! Built on a reef/sandbar! You can get more information in the See it & Do it section of this site.....It is Beautiful!!!!! FUN, TOO - You dont want to miss this place, AMAZING!!!!
Enjoy, Littlemamalisa
Standing in the water at the bottom of stairs...
Makin new friends.. "Hi Lennox!"
THIS LOOKS LIKE A BUNDLE OF STICKS WITH A THATCHED ROOF STANDING IN THE WATER, LOOK VERY FRAGILE TO ME, A STRONG WIND AND THE WHOLE THING IS GONE.
Floyd's is anything but fragile. They made it through Hurricane Ivan in 2004. They lost the thatch and part of the floor, but the actual structure stayed intact. They lost their "storage shed" with Dean in 2007, but they even retained some of the thatch on the main structure. Pretty amazing!
Its actually been through many hurricanes. And littlemamalisa, are those pictures recent?
It is absolutely amazing how sturdy it is. I forget the wood is that it is made from but once you get out there you will see and feel how strong the structure is.
Hey Coppa - They were taken in March, why?
Memories! The Pelican Bar is a must see when in the area! Have Floyd cook you up some fresh fish or lobster caught that day, have a few red stripe and enjoy the fresh air, the hammock, a swim, and good company. It does not get any better than that!
Lennox saw the picture today and sends his regards! He says to come back soon!
Thank You Suz and Dan! You made my morning! Lennox left a lasting impression and I am glad he remembers us! He ooozzes Good Vibes
Soon Come, Lisa
is the bar in front of Frenchman's Bay or Billy's Bay ??
I'm glad to see that ukey is back in the ocean where he belongs. I know he had a surgury and was unable to take part in such events.
Pelican is a little over half way to Black River by boat. It is not off the coast of Treasure Beach per se.
OK, I found this on Frommers.com -
Plenty Water Deh 'Bout
Jamaica's most bizarre bar, the Pelican Bar at Parottee Point (tel. 876/354-4218), lies on a shoal off this point and stands in shallow water on stilts made from acacia trees. Surely there is no more ramshackle bar in the Caribbean than the little hut of Floyd (real name Denever Delroy Forbes). Under a half-thatched half-tarp roof, he serves yachties and boaters seeking a pit stop as they head up the Black River. This rickety structure looks as if it's going to fall into the sea at any minute, but is usually packed with patrons. Many drinkers enjoy their rum punches or their Red Stripe beer while standing in the shallow waters around the patchwork bar of wood and other materials called "tings." Amazingly, if you notify him in advance, Floyd will even cook your dinner -- fresh fish, fried or steamed, or maybe freshly caught Caribbean lobster for that special treat. His stove? Two car wheel rims fired by wood. His house cocktail is Pelican Perfection, a concoction made with lime juice, sugar, white rum, and ginger beer.

Off on a tangent again.
It was a late 70's Frommer publication on alternative or ecotourism that first showed me this possibility.
Many do not want typical vacate-shun experiences. I think many investors now recognise this. The All-Included experience is now available.
Some want their experience to include local culture, wildlife and history. A learning experience along with a getaway from the 'normal' Western work time.
He does use acacia for part of the structure. There are other woods used too. Floyd has been cooking on little hibachi things for as long as I can remember and I never even heard of that Pelican Perfection drink. Usually just Red Stripe or red Appleton when it comes to booze out there.
I have just come back from TB and after many years finally took the trip out to Pelican Bar (not happy about being out on the open sea) and it was a wonderful experience I will never forget.
David 'Nealey' took us, though we could have gone with Ted or Dennis etc. It is about 20 mins from Frenchman and is just off the coast of Parrotee which is 5 mins from Black River - not that far from land. He took it very slowly going and I got some lovely photos of the coastline and villas including Nancy Kennedy's.
It is on a sand bank so the water is shallow and lovely and warm, but I must warn you to be very careful and to lower yourself into the sea as I jumped and hurt my foot. I understand that the lovely Floyd is going to correct this. I can also confirm that it is very sturdy.
An excellent trip and well worth it, wish I had gone sooner.
Jean, I believe you are referring to Peter and Karen Kennedy's villa, Rainbow Tree. Was it kind of a turquoise color with a wide beach in front of it? If so, that's the villa that's being raffled for the kids. Maybe you can post a picture here.
Jumping out of a boat near the Pelican Bar or anywhere is not advised. Jumping out of the Pelican Bar is definitely not advised. Walk down the stairs and hang on until one of your feet touches the sand. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
Fantastic Jean! Lets see some photos???
I am heading back to TB in July and can't wait to take my friend to the Bar! Really a DO NOT MISS on the trip to TB!!!
well first you have to start at Eggys on fishermans. Take a boat with Ted to pelican bar and black river. The best time you will ever have
Christen
Apologies, yes it will have been Peter and Karen's villa, a very beautiful place. Never seen it from the sea before and was misinformed. When I get myself sorted I will post photos.
I would never dream of jumping from anything normally. If you are young and pliable no probs but I am not and should have sat down and lowered myself into the sea but then in hindsight!!! But it was still not easy getting out.
I disagree, firstly you should start off with a lovely breakfast (or lunch) at Kevin's "Smurf's" cooked by Tatianne and finish at Eggy's!
I would like to thank all my friends for looking after me again, especially Evelyn and Omar, George, Gairy, Andrew, Preston, Linda, Mr & Mrs Campbell, Alisha, Jefta, Gregg, Troy, Fish Tea, Stanley, Kenny, Tatianne, Miss Clessy, Robin, Chris, Kitty, Miss Emblyn, Chef, Winsome etc etc The list is endless. I miss you all so much. I would also like to thank my man, who has gone to the US, for setting me free.
Holiday blues eh!
