Concerned,

I'm going to Treasure Beach in late January, renting a Toyota Rav from Dhana Car Rental in Mo Bay for $78/day U.S. This includes insurance and Jamaicas 15% consumption tax or whatever its called. Good Luck

Just wondering how much it is to buy a cheap car also?

Dear Shock,

We put a tremendous amount of value on our Time while we are in Jamaica. We have friends in Kingston, Browns Town and Clarendon. A Car rental allows us to move quickly and allows us a lot of freedom and flexibility. Dhana Car Rentals is a Jamaican company that gives great service and prices. Get a quote from Hertz or Island car rental and you'll se prices of $100 to $125.00 per day with taxes added on. We are just simple folks from Kansas who can't come to this beautiful Island everyday. We try and make it every 2 or 3 years, so we make the most of out time. Can't wait to get there in January.

It is hard to answer the question of the average price for a car. You can get a decent used car (nothing fancy and around 8-10 years old) starting at $250,000 JA going up. If you want something newer you will be looking at $500,000 and up.

Insurance will depend on the type of coverage you want and the type of car you buy. If you want 3rd party insurance it will be considerably cheaper than full comprehensive coverage. Your age, who you have named on your policy for driving, your driving record, all will influence this cost, just like elsewhere in the world.

On average, a car around 8 years old for 3rd party would be around $35,000 and full comprehensive coverage would be around $100,000. Again, this is for personal use only. If you are insuring for Public Passenger (taxi) or Commercial, then you are looking at much higher rates.
