The black sand

could u tell me how did the black sand came about?if there is any thing more that u can tell me about treasure beach i would be grateful.

The black sand is merely a mixture of Iron in the sand. There is a very large iron deposit on the south coast. An experiment that my Dad, my brothers & I used to do in Alligator Pond where the sand is very black, is to collect the iron shavings by holding a magnet over the sand. It perhaps have to do with past volcanic activity as well. Those are some of the theories I have heard.

If this helps, my father always used to say the black sand was iron pyrites and I think he got this info from a geologist so Maurhar would seem to confirm this assessment!
