Bamboo Avenue

Located along the main A2 road between Lacovia and Middle Quarters, Bamboo Avenue is a picturesque two and a half mile stretch of bamboo trees which arch to form a natural tunnel. Planted in the early 1900's to provide a respite from the hot sun for the sugar cane workers of Holland Estates, today it is a favorite spot for coconut and peanut vendors to ply their trade. Stop and enjoy a refreshing coconut water while snapping a few pictures of this famous attraction.

Boat Tours

The Black River boat tour begins when you climb into a local fishing boat and follow the scenic coast for about an hour, possibly spotting dolphins frolicking in the sea or cranes and other birds resting on sandbars. At the mouth of the Black River, the engine slows and the scenery changes. For the next seven miles, mangrove trees filled with a variety of birds line the shores along with reeds and ferns. Fishermen in dugout canoes collect their shrimp and crab traps amongst resting crocodiles as water hyacinth gently float past. Many visitors liken it to the African Queen.

The Sunny Island boat tour takes you in the opposite direction as Black River past the Pedro Bluff and along the cliffs where Lover's Leap towers 1750 feet above. Once arriving at the sand spit known as Sunny Island you will see it is aptly named due to its lack of trees and vegetation. A colorful reef surrounds the island and is great for snorkeling. After a few hours of swimming and snorkeling, cruise to Alligator Pond and dine at a fresh seafood restaurant located on the beach. Let your food settle while enjoying the unspoiled vista on the ride home.

Guts River

This small spring-fed river offers a serene setting for a cool swim in crystal-clear waters that are said to be medicinal. Dive into a 20 foot swimming hole or snorkel past a variety of underwater vegetation and animal-life giving you the sensation of being in a huge aquarium. Then enjoy a walk along the deserted beach to where the river meets the sea...all the while marveling at how untouched this piece of paradise is. However, on weekends and holidays this quiet spot comes alive with Jamaicans who come for the pulsing reggae and fresh fish prepared by local vendors.

Milk River Bath

The highest radioactive mineral bath in the world (50 times more so than Vichy, France and three times those of Karlsbad in the Czech Republic) Milk River Baths claims to provide temporary relief from the pain of arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, gout, sciatic nerve, lumbago, and nervous conditions. Some even believe taking a drink of the water will enhance the healing powers. Up to four people can enjoy a bath in one of six small private rooms. Because of the level of radioactivity you are limited to no more than a 30 minute bath. Also available on the property is a modest 20 room hotel, restaurant, and masseuse. This attraction is very popular with Jamaicans and can become crowded on weekends and holidays.

YS Waterfalls

This waterfall, comprised of eight cascades falling 120 feet, is one of the most beautiful and well-kept attractions in Jamaica. (In fact, the Browne family, owners for the last 110 years, recently won an environmental award for their efforts.) A tractor-drawn jitney takes you through fields of Guango, Cotton, Quickstick and Cedar trees where thoroughbred racehorses and Jamaican Red Poll cattle graze. At the end of the ride lies the waterfall, complete with a Tarzan-style rope swing, calm pools for swimming, picnic areas, and changing rooms.

For an additional $6.00 US you can go on a 45 minute tubing excursion down the YS River starting at the bottom of the falls and ending up further downstream where the jitney will pick you up.

A Zip (Canopy) tour is now available for $30 US.
