New York Times: "Portraits of Grief":: BERRY BERENSON PERKINS (1948-2001)
"The Touch of an Angel"

Hers was a life of almost fairy tale proportions. She was a granddaughter of the French courturier Elsa Schiaparelli. She was an intimate of Halston; a photographer for Life and Vogue, a model with Vermeer-blue eyes and golden hair; an actress; the sister of Marisa Berenson; the wife of Anthony Perkins; the mother of their two handsome sons.

But ask friends and family members what Berry Berenson Perkins was, and the answer comes to one word: angel.

"If there was ever a person who could be called a living angel, I think Berry was", said Gale Parker, a friend. Her sister, Marisa Berenson, used the word, too. "She touched everybody who met her," she said.

Mrs Perkins, 53, was devoted to her two sons, Oz and Elvis. But she had experienced her share of pain, having nursed her husband for two years before his death in 1992.

Seven years ago, while visiting Jamaica, she met Albert Parchment, whom friends know as Coot, at a party.
"We stayed up all night talking," he said. Then he took her back to her hotel and went home. "I couldn't wait for daylight to come to get to see her in the morning."
The two fell in love, and soon she was living between homes on Cape Cod and in Jamaica, where they ran a bar in Treasure Beach. After spending the summer on the Cape, she said good-bye to Mr Parchment at the airport as he returned to Jamaica. Then she boarded American Airlines Flight 11 to see Elvis, a musician, perform in Hollywood.

Despite her travels, she was always there for her friends. One of them, Nuala Boylan, said, "Berry, darling, you will be with us always."

Berry will not be forgotten by anyone who's life she touched. She was unforgettable and will continue to be missed by her friends in Treasure Beach.

My thoughts and prayers are with all who lost someone on that day.

I, too, would like to take a moment to remember Miss Berry - who will certainly never be forgotten. She left an indelible impression on my soul...so vibrant and full of life!

My heart goes out to her family and loved ones...and to all that lost family and friends on that fateful day ten years ago!

Miss Amy (Dr. Gottlieb) wrote a memorable tribute to Berry in a Guestbook back around the one-year anniversary of Berry's loss to this life. It was a slight extension of words and photos that she contributed to Berry's Profile on TB.Net for September 2001.

With the many sensitive portraits of people from her travels, as shown recently in this Forum, I can only presume that Berry's talents as a creative photographer of style and beauty with earthy grace may have had a tinge of influence on Miss Amy's pursuits today.

With un-implicit permission to re-direct, Miss Amy... this is what you wrote, and it seems to come directly from your Caring & Healing persona:

Berry was a true gift! We met years ago in Treasure Beach, Jamaica. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer at the time, and Berry had just met Coot... I feel so fortunate to have had her in my life. She radiated warmth and kindness...and had an inner spirit that touched the lives of everyone she encountered. Berry, I hope you know how much I loved you. I don't think you were aware of how deeply you impacted my life. You gave me hope when I thought things were hopeless. You inspired me and gave me courage to face my weaknesses, for which I am forever grateful. You were a true friend...always lending an ear or providing a hug when I needed it most. Your untimely death has affected us all. I can't imagine Treasure Beach without you! You were an integral part of the community. As devastated as I am about your passing, I'm comforted knowing that you lived a life surrounded by people who truly loved and cared for you. Please know that you will forever live within my soul. Good-bye Miss Berry...may you rest in peace...
