Veteran journalist C Roy Reynolds is dead
Wednesday, August 03, 2011

VETERAN journalist C Roy Reynolds, OD, passed away at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) yesterday morning following a long illness.
Reynolds, affectionately known as 'C Roy', a son of Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth, worked with the Ministry of Agriculture, before embarking on what was to become a long, illustrious career as a journalist.
His widow Beverly Robotham-Reynolds said in a release yesterday, that "it was his love for literature and the command for the English Language that led him to the field of journalism."

Reynolds was known for his no-nonsense, truthful and witty writing, which earned him spots as a columnist for the Gleaner, the Twin City Sun and the Jamaica Journal as well as freelance writer with several other publications.
Reynolds also worked for a short time as news editor for the now defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), before heading to the Jamaican Consulate in New York, where he was information attache.
C Roy Reynolds was conferred with the Order of Distinction in 1994. Three years later he was given the Press Association of Jamaica, Veteran Journalist of the Year Award.
Ten years ago, in 2001, he was forced to stop writing due to two massive strokes which rendered him paralysed and almost speechless.
Reynolds is survived by his wife Beverly, four children from a previous marriage, sisters, brothers and other relatives.

PAJ pays tribute to C Roy Reynolds
Dear Editor,
The Press Association of Jamaica mourns with the family and colleagues of veteran journalist C Roy Reynolds, a stalwart of the profession, who died on Tuesday after a long illness.
The PAJ remembers Reynolds as a journalistic authority on agricultural issues, who became the voice of the sector during radio programs on Radio Jamaica. Reynolds would for years share his vast knowledge of the sector in his columns in The Gleaner.
His views and suggestions were highly regarded for the publication's Farmers Weekly focus.
Reynolds is remembered as an excellent source of information for all journalists on the agriculture beat, and he would guide younger practitioners in particular about issues within the sector requiring attention.
A versatile and articulate journalist, his repertoire was not limited to agriculture and he became the sounding board for others, on a variety of topics. When consulted, he would provide detailed information in response to questions posed, always ready with a supporting anecdote or joke.
Managing Editor of the North Coast Times, Franklin McKnight, remembers Reynolds as having a great facility with prose which was displayed during the time he worked for The Gleaner and also during his commentaries.
"He had a wide knowledge about agriculture, industry and commerce and politics, among other areas that he covered for years."
PAJ member, Christopher Serju, describes Reynolds as "competent, confident and kind. A jovial person, he would share this information with a liberal dose of humor".
The PAJ salutes him for his graciousness and generosity with information, and for the seriousness and toughness he brought to journalism.
Well done, C Roy Reynolds. A grateful profession thanks you for your contribution.

I greatly valued and respected C.Roy for his work in journalism. I still recall a detailed piece he did for the Daily News about the severe drought we had in Treasure Beach in the late 1970s and the dust bowl it created in the Great Pond; so much so that it drove several families living in the path of the blowing sand out of their homes for months. Back then, ironically, the problem was not too much water but no water!

A sharper wit than C.Roy you couldn't find!
What is more, he was never too busy to share his expertise and knowledge with younger members of the field.

I will always treasure his memory.
