As Peace Corp has positively affected so many of us in Treasure Beach over the years I thought it appropriate to share the following link remembering Sargent Shriver, the founder of Peace Corp.

Our very own webmaster, Eric, came to Munro and then Treasure Beach through Peace Corp. BREDS, The Treasure Beach Women's Group, and the Triathlon were all started with the help of Peace Corp volunteers. Peace Corp volunteers were invaluble with their relief efforts after Hurricane Ivan. . . and so much more!

May the seeds Mr. Shriver planted so many years ago continue to grow.

Rebecca-
Indeed, the Peace Corp has been good for Jamaica and the world. I remember as a little girl at Sandy Bank Primary School, there were two young women who spent time and founded the Sandy Bank United Girls Club with us. I was a proud member and still have my sash in my mother's trunk. I don't recall their names now, but those two young women taught us a lot. And man did we cry when their "tour of duty" was up and they had to leave! There was also "Mr. Neil" who worked with our fishermen in the late '60s/early '70s. He became a part of us and has stayed in touch with members of the community. As for Eric, he's still serving in this unique way. Dude, you rock!
May Sargent Shriver rest in peace!

Thanks for the kind words, Marcia. Very good to hear that my predecessors are still fondly remembered today for their good acts.

March 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the Peace Corps and my local RPCV (Returned Peace Corps Volunteer) group is recognizing it on Saturday the 5th by donating time to the Multicultural Refugee Coalition, a group which helps integrate refugees from all over the world into their new life in the United States. I'll be helping teach computer literacy...hope they all like Angry Birds :-)
