Hi everyone, I am afraid I have some bad news on our dear friend Zim, he is in the hospital in Mandeville, he has suffered a mild heart attack due to a blood clot in his left leg just above the knee. The clot has restricted the flow of blood to the rest of his leg and the leg is no longer alive so to speak. Two doctors have looked at him and both agree that the only chance he has is to amputate the leg mid thigh. Even this is risky due to the condition of his heart. As far as the actual surgery the doctors are, however, fairly sure he can make it through and be able to go on living for some time. Please pray for him. This is a very sad time for me as I am sure it will be for all of you.

Regards,
Kory South

Hi Everyone, Thanks for all your phone calls and offers to help, it is much appreciated, at this time we are ok financially, we need prayers more than anything, Zim is in good spirits and is up to his same little humorous mischief ! Especially with the nurses !

As it stands the doctors did not all agree today to do the surgery, but all agreed it still has to be done, it will not however be performed until Zim is in agreement with it, and he understands completely , we rubbed the leg all day, trying to rejuvenate it, But it doesn’t look good, we found a spot just behind his ankle today, where the skin is starting to come off, ultimately if it becomes life or death, I think Zim will choose life, but its up to him, and we don’t want to rush anything.

The doctors have ordered a brain ct, basically an exray of his brain to make sure he doesn’t have any bleeding of the brain, like a hemorage, from the stroke or heart attack he had already, as this could complicate surgery in a very damaging way. They are really making sure he will be o.k. for the surgery.

The doctors so far have been nothing but very professional, and very thorough in explaining everything, and even let us call them on the phone if we have any questions of which we have had many .

All I can say is keep him in your prayers, he is tough, he knows what he is facing, and in light of it all, he is still Zim, it could be a lot worse if he had suffered a severe stroke or something like that .

I encourage those that can to go visit him, you can call me for the visiting hours and his location as it may change from day to day. 852-5166

Nuff respect

Zim, We are sorry to learn of your challenging circumstance. It is encouraging that you are receiving such attentive and professional medical care. It is also reassuring, but not surprising, to read all the love, support, and prayers being provided by your many friends from around the world. You have had our hearts since our first visit to the original Sunset Villa in '89, and our many subsequent returns. With more time together to look forward to, we send you our most positive thoughts and energy.
We love you, Zim!

Hi Everyone just a quick update, as we have to go hospital early today, Zim is still in good spirits, and he is eating good, they run the brain scan yesterday, we don’t know the results yet, the doctors have now ordered 4 heart tests for today, one of which Zim will have to go to Kingston by ambulance to have done, we are more worried about the ride in the ambulance than the heart test !! I guess the doctors are really making sure he is ok for surgery. All of the doctors are still telling us the leg has to come off, but ultimately that is up to Zim. If any of you can, please go visit him especially in the evenings, as they don’t let anyone visit before noon , the nights are very long for him.

Thanks,
Kory South

Hi Everybody , another update, Zim today had a meeting with all 4 doctors, and they talked to him about what he is facing and he flatly told them he come in with him leg and him leaving with it. The leg is starting to decompose and I asked the doctors, how long he would live if we brought him home, they said it will get infected and the infection will cause toxins to go into his blood stream and this will be extremely painful, and we will end up bringing him right back, and at that point all the tests that we have been doing will have to be done over. Please I encourage everyone that is available to go see Zim and encourage him to stay with us for as long as he can, hence go forward with the operation, I don’t want to see him die. All in all it is Zim’s choice and I have thought if I were in his shoes what I would do, I might call it a day, then again I guess we would have to be in that position to know what we would do. I picture building him a sidewalk down to sawdust shop and him taking his electric wheel chair and going for a beer!! Then there is the risk he wont make it through the operation, I am sure that is weighing heavily on his mind that is why they are running so many tests. Please go visit him if you can,

Hi Everyone the situation is getting very seriuos. In all fairness to whoever Frenchman girl is, I agree all to often in Jamaica we see limbs removed when it may not be neccesary and there can be alot of missdiagnoses here mostly in remote hospitals in remote areas. I can positively gaurantee you, this is not the case
with Zim,These doctors have covered every base right from the start, he was in one of the best private hospitals on the island , with several doctors, and I would put my life in their hands anyday. Where he is now there are a team of doctors, 3 of which are from the private hospital and have been with Zim right from the start ultimately if Zim agrees they will be doing the surgery. The whole process has been nothing but professional and personally I dont think he would have gotten as good of care in Miami

Sorry Frenchman girl, I have to agree with Kory. I went with Kory and Janet to Mandeville yesterday to see Zim and the condition of his leg is very serious. As Kory mentioned he has a team of 4 of the best doctors and surgeons on the island looking after him and their prognosis is the same. The leg must be removed to save his life. I have to take this opportunity to say that Kory and Janet are looking after Zim as if he was their father. Only the best private hospital, the best doctors and the best medical care for Zim as far as they are concerned. They go every day to see him from 11 a.m and don't leave until 6. They bathe him, feed him, talk with him, they have paid for all of his medical tests and hospital bills, taken him to specialists in Kingston, paid for ECG's, and CAT scans. There is no way they would have the surgeons remove his leg if it wasn't absolutely necessary. I saw it for myself and although I am no doctor I can safely say there is no alternative at this point.

Frenchman Girl...I can certainly understand your concerns and based on Kory's updates I am convinced that although it is ultimately Zim's decision..Kory will not allow it if it wasn't truly necessary. And although I love Zim, I also respect that he has the right to refuse to have it done, and hope he understands the consequences.
I can't imagine TB without Zim..and I wish with all my heart that he is still there when I come back.

I am sure that all readers do not know of the full relationsahip between Kory and Zim. I had the pleasure of staying at Sunset a few years ago, and of course Zim is one of the major characters of the Resort. He told me a few stories of 'keeping an eye' on Kory when Kory was just a small lad. So Zim has been watching over Kory since Kory was knee high to a grasshopper. A. Todd is correct that their relationship is like a close family. With that said, Kory don't forget to take care of yourself.

Every day in Miami legs are remove for the right reasons too. Many for the same reason as Zim's. Give our Jamaican Doctor's some credit, they know what they are doing.

Why take him here to be a burden to the Miami
-Dade County when he's getting his medical expenses taken care of in Jamaica. Don't you see our best hospital here is about to close some of it's doors because of financial strains

Hi Everyone, well I am glad to report Zim has given the doctors the go ahead to amputate the leg, as bad as it may sound, it is his only chance. He is fully aware of what he has consented to, and he is quite scared to be quite honest with you, I cant blame him, surgery is dangerous even if your young and very healthy, on the other hand they have ran so many tests, and I talked to the heart specialist yesterday, he said the heart isn’t 100% but he should be fine, Please now is the time to pray for Zim and may God be with him. The operation should take place Monday or Tuesday, I have a feeling they will ask for blood to be given, Janette is ready for the occasion. She has been unbelievable in this whole ordeal, as we come home from the hospital she starts washing Zims sheets and pajamas, and t-shirts, back up at 5:00 am and by 9:30 we go back, everyday,. Not to mention our business’s and our kids. We all love and care about Zim and have for years. To me todays decision is a big relief, at least he has a chance now, if he pulls through, and he heals properly, he can go on and be with us for many a day and even years to come, we must have a welcome home party as soon as he is able.

One Love

Hi everyone another quick update as I am very tired . Zim was called into surgery at 6:30 this evening and I am sorry to report by the time they got him to the operating room (they call it operating theater here)his blood pressure went from 160 to 200 +, I think he is very worried and had some anxiety, cant say as though I blame him.they gave him an injection tonight as we were leaving to help bring down the pressure, and I think they will try again sometime tommorow, we are going up early just in case, Miss Sally Henzel and myself had bought flowers and gifts and were ready for the recovery ,Janette and Joyce never left his bed side,we were all a bit dissapointed, but Zim was still in good spirits, when one of the nurses asked him what happened he puffed up his lips blew her a kiss and said I missed you when I was in there !! Hopefully tommorrow will go better. Thanks everyone for all the phone calls and medical advice, and all the love and prayers you send to Zim.

Good Morning everyone. The hospital made Janette and myself leave at 8:30 last night. As we reached home they called and said he was in surgery. I called at 1:;00 , 12:00 and at 1:00 and he still was in the operating room. Got a call at 6:00 this morning. He is out of surgery and a bit drowsy but otherwise he is okay. That’s all we know right now. We are leaving out to go see him right now, hope they let us in.

Update on Zimroy, Yesterday zim was a bit tired, but otherwise fine , the surgery went without any complications, last night his blood pressure was quite high, but the doctors sent us to get 3 prescriptions for him, and they said that should take care of it. All being well Zim should be able to come home mid next week, or sooner, I think it is important that we enable Zim to be able to get out and get around as much if not more than the usual Zim did, he will be staying with us as long as neccessary and until he feels he can go back to his house. We are going to build some ramps and sidewalks so he can move about freely, go to the shop ect. It sgoing to be hard for him still, and we truly hope he can deal with the mental aspect of the whole thing. As far as the smoking and drinking, he will be on alot of meds which i am going to personally monitor, it is imperative that he gets them as scheduled and with no alcohol, something he hasnt done well with in the past. then the smoking, all yesterday he wanted one, after all this time, thats going to be a tough one, I think realistically the best we can hope for is only one or 2 a day , smoking drastically impairs the healing process of people, If we take everyhting away, he will be very miserable.I dont think we can stop him, he will find them, we will surely strongly discourage it.

Did i read this right?

Someone has an operation and the doctor writes a prescription and ask the family/friend to go and purchase same.

Never heard of such a thing as this taking place in this country/The good old USA.
Kory please keep doing good we need more people like you in this troubled world.

Call me crazy but I don't think that is the time/place to start a discussion about smoking/drinking or about the medical care in a third world country.
Yes these things are important but Zim is also stubborn and it's not easy to convince someone of his age to quit something now. Also, medical care in a third world country is different in many ways compared to the US.
This is about Zim, getting him back to a reasonable health and helping him be able to adapt to what is going to be a different lifestyle. Please, let's keep this thread based on prayers and good wishes for Zim and thanks to Kory and his family for making sure that he gets/got the best he possibly could under the circumstances.

I think what Kory is doing is what almost anyone reading here would do. I am not downplaying the importance of his deeds, but Zim is like a father to Kory. Wouldn't each of us do the same?

Hi Everyone, thanks for all the nice thoughts and prayers , Zim is doing fairly well he isnt 100% but considering what he has been through, he is progressing well in my opinion, last night he had a male nurse administering to him and he looked up and said, tell me sumting you is a man or a woman !!! same old Zim !! the doctors are trying to get his blood pressure under control before they release him, and trying to prevent any future clotting of the blood which could cause stroke or heart attack, he isnt out of the woods yet, but I hope and pray he will be fine.

Hi everyone , Just wanted to let you all know that Zim had a great day today, this afternoon we were with him for about 5 or 6 hours , and he is coming around the corner, his speech is much better, most of the time, he can lift himself up in the bed, he is practicing moving his new limb, its takes him a while to get going , but he is damn near 100 % once you get him started, we had a great visit, I told him I was going to the chiropractor as I have neck problems, he said i can take care of that for you kory, then after a while he said you had better go and come back, then in the evening he said you better get going I dont want you be driving after dark, you may crash. mi dont want that, that may seem like not alot, but to me it tells everything. Doctors have him on a new medication as of today to prevent blood clots, they want to see how it goes for a few days, after that we have to test his blood every 3 weeks, and take the tests with him to mandeville, they want to monitor the thickness of his blood to prevent any further stroke or heart attack. Keep praying for Zim it looks like God has some work left for him here on earth. This isnt to say he is all better, in his situation anything can happen, but it does look promising.

Is he on Coumadin aka warfarin?
If so, he needs watch his vitamin K which is basically any food with green in it. When he ingests that, his PTINR number will go down which means his blood is thicker, putting himself at risk for clots. Drinking and antibiotics will cause his numbers to skyrocket which will make his blood too thin putting him at risk for uncontrolled bleeding. It's a tightrope he must walk, so encourage him all you can. Email me privately if you want more information. Send him our love.

Hi Everyone, Janette and myself just reach back from Mandeville. Zim has been in the hospital for 21 days now. Day before yesterday he suffered a stroke during the night and as Janette arrived the next morning she called me and told me to come now. When I arrived Zim was completely different as we had left him, not responding and breathing was very sporadic, and he could not squeeze his right hand. Today I am glad to say he is much better. He is communicating but not completely with words. He knows who is there and he is trying to talk, and after 3 or 4 hours tonight he was starting to get out actual words. Although his right hand seems to have no movement at all today he looked me in the eye and squeezed my arm with his left hand so hard it hurt. His breathing has leveled off. They are currently feeding him through a tube but tonight I held ice in his mouth, as his mouth looked dry. They have an IV in him and he is hydrated but tomorrow I plan on trying to get him to eat something by mouth, if they allow it. That is where it is. I do not want to get anybodys hopes too high but I will be there tomorrow as I have been everyday with KFC mashed and gravy, and a cantaloupe smoothie. He loves company and is still blowing kisses to the nurses. Very alert tonight, good old Zim. It hurts me as much to type this as it probably does for some of you to read this. He's not done by a long shot. He is tough and resilient as most Jamaicans are, and every hope and prayer from me and my family are with Mr. Zimroy, AKA Kaya.

One Love

Hi Everyone, great news , Zim is making very good progress, yesterday he was very responsive, winking at us , smiling at times, his speech is coming back to him bit by bit, although he still cant move his right arm, everything else seems to be working quite fine, they did a chest x/ray of his lungs last night, and i meeting with the doctors today, to discuss the coming home process and what medications and tests he will need, and if he will need oxygen, the reason I havent gotten back to you sooner , we really dont want to get everybodys hopes up and then have something happen, as they have taken him off the blod thinner completely, but God willing and with some more prayers from all of us, maybe just maybe Zim will be home by weekend, we are leaving soon to go see him I cant wait to see his responses this morning, Thanks

This is wonderful news. Zim is blessed to be surrounded by so much love and caring.

A note about clots: my mom has advanced Alzheimer's and mobility issues. At one point, it looked as if she was developing a clot in her leg, so she had a filter inserted in one of the major arteries, in her stomach, to keep it from migrating to her lungs, heart or brain before it dissolved. I felt some comfort that there was a preventive measure in place. It was a simple, outpatient procedure, although it involved anesthesia. She was in and out of the hospital in an afternoon.

I'm sure the good doctors are on top of everything, just wanted to share an option that worked for us.

To repond to Sister fire, We had asked if that could be done to his leg, as I had a friend that had a similar procedure done in Jamaica for bad circulation, the doctors said due to his age and the time that the clot had been there, that procedure couldnt be done, but thanks for the info.

Another update on Zim , I am afraid it is bad news again, they cannot get his stomach to stop bleeding, they originally thought it was the blood, thinner, but he has been completely off that for 4 days, and still some bleeding going on, they had us pay for another test this morning, to see if it is an ulcer in the stomach, He is still fighting, his best times are early morning,he communicates with the doctors failry well, he just sleeps alot during the days and evenings, he had a blood transfusion this morning, 2nd one now so far,He doesnt seem to be in alot of pain , but some discomfort with the bleeding belly, I am sure. He is a very strong man , to have gone through all this, but if another surgery is presented to us as an option for Zim from the doctors, We will really have to think hard on that decision, when do you say enough is enough, and could he live through another surgery anyway, and would he want it. Lets hope the bleeding stops, and its just the blood thinner still in his system, and that its not an ulcer, anyone have any info on stamach ulcers ??

Thanks for all the help and nice words from everyone

I pray that he recovers, the problem with medications such as drug thinners( I am assuming its warafrin), it can take a while for its effects to disappear from the body.. so he just has to hang on in there. stomach ulcers are a very common source of bleeding, and can lead to severe signs, whether it be vomiting blood or blood from the back passage.. I think that it might be prudent to wait a few days to see if the bleeding will stop, due to the warfarin. in the mean time the doctors might consider an endscope ( putting a camera down his throat to look into his stomach) and then make a desicion, as it might be an unnessecary to take further action. another option could be for him to have a barium swallow which allows the docotr to see if there are any ulcers in his stomach. however, i dont know what the procedure is for Jamaica, as the above mentioned are the procedures done here in the Uk.

I pray that he recovers

Hi Everyone , I am very sad to say that Mr. Zimroy James did pass away at 1:30 A.M. this morning, in the Mandeville Hospital, Yesterday Janette donated blood so they could give Zim a blood transfusion (You have to give to get sometimes in Jamaica even though difference in blood type they just trade hers for his) The doctors said it looked like , his body wasnt accepting the blood well, and last night he wasnt responsive at all, and he was coughing up some blood. I think he reached the point where he just couldnt fight it anymore, He was very strong to make it as far as he did, and if he didnt have the internal bleeding he probably would have made it, All of my Family and myself are very deeply saddened , Zim was like a family member to us for many many years, took me Gar fishing when I was 6 years old with his tilly lantern, we all have very fond memories of a great man with a heart as big as gold, we will miss him greatly.

Hi Kory,
Just a suggestion. Please ask the Doctors if they think the problem is "Intra- abdominal hemorrhage".

I will not get into this at this time. My dad had problems with his liver/stomach
May God be with him Zim and take him through these rough times.
May he bless you too Kory for your caring devotion.

To all well wishers & sympathisers,
Zimrie died in mandeville hospital on saturday, and i would like everyone to know that Kiaya, din, din, was a kind and loving person so friendly, a more gentle soul you could never find in treasurebech. He was always helpful if you needed him, especially with his plumbing skills,he was a fiherman but also worked at many of the guests houses as a gardener, making and mentaining, the most beaautiful gardens you now see in treasurebeach, because of this he was well known, and respected, by many visitors from overseas. He lived and enjoyed his life to its fullest extent, taking a "ONE" every now an then, we his family are so saddened by his death,But will cherish the vrey many fond memories we have of him,"forever love" R.I.P.Kiaya

Zim was part of the Treasure Beach experience for me and I met him in 1999 through Kory. I will miss his gentle smile and treasure the small piece of fossilized coral he gave to me long ago.
I always brought him a few treats from the states on every visit and there will be a tremendous sense of loss my next visit. I am glad I got to see Zim my last trip in April having a drink behind Alex's store after hours.
Respect to Kory and Janette for all of their individual effort and sacrifice. I know personally what it is like to be taken care of by Kory. He rushed me to Mandeville when I crashed on a scooter and made sure I was well taken care of.
