Why would someone want to call another "Red Gal"?
Would you also say "Black Gal"? "Brown Gal"? etc, etc?
Sounds degrading to me. The word "Gal".

I totally agree with you Native - it's time people start being respectful of each other, doesn't matter how close a relative you are.

Would Lloyd be happy if his "cus" wrote back and said "thank you very much COUSIN STUPID for the warm thoughts" hmmmmmm just a thought !!

I do not like when people call me "Reds" or "Red Gal". Not because I am of a lighter persuasion, but respect is due regardless of your ethnic background. AND I am a Proud Jamaican, from TB, who was taught to respect others and not call people out of context.

Ohhh myyy goodness here we go again..so typical of some of us Jamaicans who forget our figure of speech, culture and language. Wasn't it just last month the forum had this huge debate, as to whether Patois should infact be recognized as Jamaica's official language. See with attidude such as this, it will never be, and we will never be able to embrace our heritage. Embrace our culture, and dont take an offense to everything, that is not our style. ( I am sure he did not mean anything by it. I have known Lloyd for a loong time and he is the nicest person. I am sure the person who made the comment is not Jamaican. (it's just as if an amerian is saying heey girll) Or whats up Heffaa LoL! Just as American embrace their Ebanics..and claim it as their own, Jamaicans be jamaicans dont ever change.

chill you'al

IF SOMEONE CALL ME REDS THAT'S OK.

BUT DO NOT CALL ME GAL.

LIKE NATIVE SAID ABOVE.

"GAL" SOUNDS DISRESPECTFUL.

WHAT HAPPEN TO THE WORD GIRL?

When I win the lotto, please do not congratulate me with a name like Heffa, Have Mercy!!! Lloyd, you meant well, but some of us just don't like to be called Reds, simple as that. Enjoy you day and remember that I am on your side, a person who hates to be called Reds.

I don't think it's a matter of being jamaican and forgetting your roots and how we speak.I think it's just the way it is said 'red gal' it's not nice to post that on the website, if he sees the person and addresses her in that manner i bet you she wouldn't like it. He's got too beautiful daughters and i bet you if anyone ever call them ugly both him and their mother would raise hell. Don't do it, people were given names for a reason and if her mom wanted her to be known as red gal she would have called her red gal and not Tia.
We never know what it feels like until it happens to us.

Lawd !!! Unno talk bout something more productive nuh.If Lloyd wants to call his cousin Red Gal that is their business. We use to call a cousin of ours Red Meg and she use to love it. Not to mention Ma Graina ,Aunty Bug ,Dry shenk , Goat Foot Gal and Hoggy.
If names were to kill , some of us would not be here today.

Some people are totally missing the point, it’s not our accents or our dialects we are debating it’s the words and the form in which they are portrayed.

Miss Lue’s patoi was an ‘art form’ this is reality, real life.

In Jamaica this is normal practice but living in a foreign country how would you feel if your child came home from school crying that someone called her red/black/white, would you tell your child that person was just being friendly, I don’t think so.

Words hurt and words heal, words are beautiful words are ugly, words are degrading,
words carry stigma, complexity, inferiority use them wisely, be more positive and sensitive not everyone like to be called names.

Lets close this dialogue.

How about ACeee for a one-eyed person, or one-hand Tom for a person with one hand, or what's up fatty for a fat person....etc.. Remember when some one use to come back from foreign how people use to seh she fat and look good eeh man....or blackie for black gal..fat and rosy ....gal gal yuh tink a likkle cum mi hafi cum fi bring yuh cum ya...Oliver. Give it up guys and stop being so Americanized. Bad enough foreigner are taking over Treasure Beach...hang on to your culture..it is not a disrespect..me and my family do this all the time, and believe me we love each other...

I do understand where Lloyd is coming from, but we must remember that this site is not only read by Jamaicans. People from all over the world come here, therefore we should try to be as professional as possible. There is a time and place for everything and at times, one should think before they write. Yes, we can't forget our roots, but speaking in person is different from speaking on a forum like this. I do congratulate all the students who were successful in their GSAT placements, some may not have been placed where they wanted, but I trust each and everyone of them will make use of the opportunity. For the parents, I congratulate you all as well, you reap what you sow and nothing can make a parent(s) more proud, than seeing their kid(s) succeed. We should not take this site for granted to say whatever comes to our mouth, but instead to show people that we are all grateful of having a wonderful site like this, where we can keep in touch with one another in a respectful and positive way. I am disgusted by some of the things I read here from time to time and I am not trying to say we can't have fun, but think about other people who are reading and what they might be thinking. I am not from Treasure Beach, but I do know the area. I think we can put the Lloyd thing to rest. I do know Lloyd and think he meant well, but it probably would have been better said in person than on here. Take care all and keep the link going.

The critics are missing the point in their effort to be politically correct. These are family members addressing each other. Come on folks, lighten up. When we see each other it's always "wha' a gwaan gal?" wha' you a say bwoy ?" an' t'ings like dat. Nobody gets offended 'cause a jus' family and friends we a deal wid.Lest we forget, this was all about congaratulating a well deserved youngster on her academic achievement..... Congrats Tia.

True true, one man but whatever way you address family in public is gonna be taken as ok for public to address said family member. People, especially where we are from, will always add something to it that could easily end up hurting someone.
We are dealing in the public domain right now so while it is ok between family members it is not a wise move. That said, we have to respect the enthusiam that is being shown by Lloyd in supporting his cousin. I too offer my warm congratulations to the talented young lady.
