Those were wonderful days! Life was carefree and innocent. The most I worried about was getting to school before the bell rang. Hell, no one wanted to experience the wrath of teacher Thompson and his vibrating cane.

With my uniforms well pressed, books and pencil in hand I headed out meeting up with friends on the way deciding which lane to walk, Miss Tilda's or Miss P.T? Through the turn stiles and over the fences through Alvin grass piece always mindful I could be gored by the cattle that roamed the pastures.

At commencement, the National Anthem, scriptures and prayers were an essential part of each day. Respect, good manners and conducting our self in an appropriate manner was highly emphasized. All of these things were excellent foundations for life.

Recess! Fun time! Playing hop scotch, marbles, baseball, tag (lick and run), kids rushing to the fences to buy treats from those wonderful ladies. Lunch time! Yum! Miss Evie's red beans and dumpling soup, with a tiny piece of pig’s tail if you were lucky or chicken with bulga mixed with rice. I can taste it right now. On the playground we would socialize, flirt with the boys (puppy love). That was where good friendships were formed, some leading to love affairs and even marriage.

At the end of the school day, friends would gather in groups for the long walk home, even though it didn't seem long at the time. Betty, Mitty, Gloria, Lola, Arlene, Sharon, Marcia, Ned, John, George and Vern just to name a few. We would talk, laugh, and tease each other which sometimes resulted in a fight. If anyone had money we would stop by Miss Tilda's shop for candy or Ms. Imie for drops which was shared with those who didn't have money. Then I would head home for my fish and bammy dinner.

*Sigh* Today I'm feeling very Nostalgic. I cherish the memories of by gone days and reminisce with old friends whenever we meet.

P.S. Sandy Bank School days wasn't just all about friendship, fun and food. I did manage to learn school and life lessons in conjunction with having fun.

Great article, I attended Sandy Bank School in the 80's and those days were great. Those were some of the best times of my life eventhough I got hit by the teachers so many times. I remember when my friends and I would pick the leafs from this tree in Sandy Bank lane and rub it in our hands with salt to pop the teachers belt. We went to class all excited about the whole situation of doing something to get hit so we could break their belts and boy let me tell you those are some strong belts because not one belt broke. The only thing that happened was we had red hands and tears running down our face, the best times ever i'm telling you. Peanut drops from a lady sorry for forgetting your name, and Ice cream from Bull great times my people. Everyone would ask Bull to save the Ice cream bag for them. Big up to everyone that attended Sandy Bank School. Big up to the people I attended school with, love you all.

I think SBS68 is trying to say that Joan forgot to put 'HANDLE' on Maas Alvin's name.In the days gone by we would get our 'tails' whopped if we call an older person by their first name.Like Jamrock said, let's forget about this little error.Joan surely did a very good job.

Could it be that the lady called the place just like how she heard it called by others. Maybe she did not correlate the piece of land with Mass Alvin J. Billy's Bay.. Was there a Mr. Billy? etc. etc. I don't think any harm was meant.

In the first article written by Earl, he referred to Mass Felix as felix and "BLACK BOY" which I feel is a racist and derogative name. No one complained or cared about that. Where are those hypocrites? Are they being selective about who is important enough to be called Mass? and who they choose to judge and criticize? SHAME ON THEM! I know no disrespect was intended on both their part. Just making a point, now lets move on!

Hmmmmm, I have to admit that when I first visited Jamaica and heard people referred to as Blackie, Blacka, Blacks, Black Boy, etc. it took me aback and with my American mentality hesitated to call someone by any of those names. After about a week, however, I realized there was nothing derogatory about it. It was simply their nicknames. Now I have several friends whom I refer to as Blacks, Blackie, Blacka, etc. As a matter of fact I have friends whom are called, Indian, Chinie, Red Man, Yellow, and the name which has stuck to me - Fatty. Trust me - as an American, that was one that took about 3 months for me to get used to!

dear observer i dont think earl meant any harm by calling mr felix(BLACK BOY)because thats the name every body know him as i bet if you ask half the people who is mr felix they will tell you they dont know.im pretty sure you know that almost every body in jamaica has a nick name and some times some people dont know these people real names

With due respect people you've missed or are just avoiding the point. Both men were refered to in the same manner in the articles yet no one took offence to Maas Felix being refered to Felix only Alvin. Stop being bias they are both equal men. I feel your negative judgments are extremely unfair to Joan, her article was well written. It caused me to reflect, and be inspired. After all I think that was the purpose of her piece. Mission accomplished Joan.

I don't understnd what all the negativity is all about, why simple mistake has to be such a big deal, no wonder why some people went to school and didn't learn anything, they spent too much time picking on every nitty, gritty, and not seeing the big picture. Please just enjoy the memories they are really great. Criticizers give us some of your memories love to hear them.

Long gone the days but the memories still lingers in my mind.Thursday one of best day in school because it was sewing day."GOD HELP US WHEN WE FORGET OUR NEEDLE". Teacher Thampson always come around to check for needles. For those of us who forget to take a needle to school would show him a piece of dry grass for our needle. "WRONG' dont even try it. Then there was Miss Etta with her brown grater cake after school, and of course it was dinner time so she would give us dinner too. Apart from school there are other good things that reminds me of "DEM GOOD OLE DAYS". My father Pahark could not afford to set a lot of pots in the sea, the most six or seven. Many days he would come home from sea and the first thing he would say, "old lady not a thing in the pot today, but Captin (UNCLE RADDY) give me this. It was enough to buy flour, sugar, oil, two packs of crackers and of course enough fish to go along with it for our dinner. So uncle Raddy from me to you "God bless you and dem good ole days". How can I forget miss Ina who would never close her eyes until all the fishermen are safely home from sea. What I really want to say, to all the teachers of Sandy Bank School who have cross my path, to the elderly of Treasure Beach, you have left me with many gifts some of which are love, dignity, and respect to others. These gifts I share each day with my children. God bless Treasure Beach and the people of Treasure Beach. love you all Pearl.

In addition to what Pearl said, I am reminded of those Thusdays when the girls would be taught sewing skills and the boys would do gardening.Remember those gardens that were in the center of the school and were assigned to the different houses? The grass straw was a popular decoy for a needle or showing the head of a pin which as Pearl said would never work.

How about those Fridays when they would bring out the old time ice cream bucket, with the coarse salt and ice and we would spin the handle for what seems like a life-time befor we could get a cone of ice-cream.Those were surely the good old days.

Does anyone remember how we used to pick off the young, green mangoes from the tree on the slope beside Teacher Thompson's cottage.... those were good!!! then pray that he didn't catch us?
Remember how we used to ride that big cassia tree, play marbles in the shade beside grade 2, the "bakiny" games with our 12 smooth stones, and sliding on the corridor on rainy days?
Remember the "long water" peas soup and the big dumplings... don't forget the occasional weevil floating around?
I do believe those days were good and simple, and I wouldn't exchange them for the ones my children are growing-up in.

Peng
You hit the nail on the head. We used to pick the green tamarind from Miss Hazel's trees during recess. One day we got back to school late and Miss PT gave me the 'beating' of my life. That was in error, but she promised to not give me a beating when I was due one (love you to death Miss PT). We also enjoyed the cornmeal dumplings/soup, cornmeal porridge and pegbread. Great combinations that I still enjoy today.

I REMEMBER WALKING TO SANDY BANK SCHOOOL BAREFEET THROUGH MASS ALVIN'S GRASS-PIECE, AS IT WAS CALLED BACK THEN, BEING SCARED OF THE COWS CHASING US. WE USED TO GO INTO THE POND AND PICK PANCAKE(I THINK THAT'S WHAT THEY WERE CALLED). WE WERE ALSO SCARED OF WALKING PASS A CAVE CALLED CAMBER HOLE, IS THAT STILL THERE? WE WERE ALSO SCARED OF WALKING PASS OLD-WHARF WHICH WAS NOTHING BUT BUSH. I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE WHEN I VISITED 2 YEARS AGO. SORRY FOR REMEMBERING ALL THE SCARY BITS.

Anyone remember Mrs McLean? She used to climb on the desks to deliver some of her floggings. I think she was crosser than Sir Sepron Jellico. How many of you remember that name? One of a Kind!
Singing days were the nicest! We learnt songs from the radio, with the assistance of Sir Sepron who was a good singer if my memory isn't deceiving me.

Mrs. Icelda McLean was indeed a beautiful person (she gave me an unnecessary 'beating', but I loved her)....her husband, Teacher McLean, the principal was a very cross man. I too remember Sepron Jellico McLean. I still have a letter of recomendation from Teacher Mclean and his writing was very beautiful, if I may describe it that way.

I met someone recently ( I can't remember who it was) who told me they had spoken to Valerie recently and I think they said she lives in Florida.

Take care boy.

Love and God bless.

Carol.

Thanks lcc for the contact; thanks TBN for the use of this site. I was able to link-up with my good friend from SBSchool. Keep the fire burning.

PS: lcc I must say you are 'still' the smartest of the bunch. Your memory is sharp.
