The post currently running regarding water quality tests reminds me of days gone by. My grandma used to sing me to bed with this lullaby:
"Rock oh rock oh
rock my baby to bed
Rock oh rock oh
rock my baby to bed
Everybody gone to spring
to hear the little bird sing
Me poor one to stay at home
to rock my baby to bed
Rock oh rock oh......"
I've never heard anyone else sing it, and wonder if anyone's ever heard this or a similar version.
The birds are not singing at the springs again Smiley, the water blessings are either entombed or polluted. The birds slaughtered or deprived of perches.
I hope our babies will hear the birds again. I am preparing my yard for my grandson. Trees and a little help from my friends.
I've never heard that lullabye. Just remembered an old family one, not as sweet as yours:
A hell of a dog upstairs
A hell of a dog upstairs
I pick up a stick
and I give him a lick
A hell of a dog upstairs.
Came from my downtown side of family, my other side were friends with dogs.
'Gentle Jesus, meek and mild
Look upon a little child
Pity my simplicity
Suffer me to come to thee.'
Amen.
'In my little bed I lie
Heavenly Father hear my cry
Lord protect me through this night
and bring me safe 'till morning light.'
Amen
Pray Mama
Pray Papa
Pray for me to come to Thee
Amen
I remember rainy times of years past
when nightfall would seasonally bring us
a symphony of frogs in overflowing ponds
saluting the rain god for their good times
With our windows flung wide
silenced radios, and no television
The sounds of the night was all we had
mother nature tickling our auditory senses
Sometimes a low note, sometimes high
then, as on cue, behind a musical pause
There would follow an orchestral crescendo
notes blended as though conducted by the maestro
They were good times then
raindrops pitta pattaing on zinc roof
when grandma would make me a glass of Milo
and see me off to bed with a kiss and a prayer.
Go to sleep my baby,
Close your tiny eyes,
Angels up above you,
Watching at you dearly from the skies.
The great big moon is shining,
And stars begin to peep,
Tis time for little pickneys
To go to sleep,
Tis time for little pickneys
To go to sleep.
My prayer was similar to yours Granny Prayer:
Pray mamaah (Mama)
Pray Papaah (Papa)
Pray Massah Jeezas (Master Jesus) to bless and make me a good
likkle chiel (little child).
For Jeezas (Jesus) sake .
Ahmen (amen)
