Let's see who can remember some of the bush that we use to drink as tea, back in the days. Even better, what benefits did we get from drinking these.

Not sure what fever grass or lime bush tea was good for, but they both had a great taste.Mint was good for upset stomach or indigestion and cerasee is a good medicine for billiousness. There are several types of mint. Can anyone name these?

for eczema i suggest that you make a strong tea using verbine (not sure of the spelling)
rather than drink the tea, you need to bath the affected area

it grows all over st. elizabeth, but may be difficult to find if it has been dry for a long time

i have had very successful results using this herb to heal my skin, it works better than the steroid cream i get from the doctor

thanks to morris for enlightening me

Anyone remember the herb tea that was given to kids every summer break? This was suppose to expel worms from the body. Wonder if they are still giving it to kids. Yuuuuuk!!!! That thing was smelly and tasted awful and boy oh boy, it would give you 'the runs' all day long.

Be careful with mint if you have stomach problems Tetley. I read somewhere that "mint increases your chance of getting acid reflux by relaxing the lower esophageal sphincter, at the end of the esophagus, allowing acid from the stomach to back up".
Three mints I'm familiar with are peppermint, spearmint, and plantation mint. You are right on about the taste of lemon leaf and fever grass. Is there something called lemon grass also?

Lemon grass is the same fever grass.

I agree with Twisted Sista about the Verbine. We recently stayed with Miss Vanny and she had recommended it to a lady from the US, who had bad eczema, with brilliant results. She had received a really lovely thank you card whilst we were at her house.
(I did post this a couple of days ago but it never appeared...I'm not sure why?)

Does anyone know what can help red spots on the scalp. When i use the medication on them they eventually turn brown, then whitish, new ones would keep pop up.

If you have the same condition like I do.I was under my dermetologist care for a year with no success.I Change doctors and now they have me using DHS zinc shampoo, which you can get over the counter.
The prescription is Taclonex scalp suspension.
I've been using those for little over a week and it's all cleared up.The prescription is very expensive tho..$575 but my doctor gave me a coupon from the manufacturer and I got it for free.I can use the same coupon six times.

verbine

sorry i dont have a photo
very green leaves, kinda pointy i guess, low to the ground, but i think it may climb a fence? with a tiny purple flower

most people in the area will know this plant and be able to point it out to you - just ask your host about it, likely you will have it in your yard or very nearby - its a weed, as most healing plants are ;-)

verbine,

that image is close to what you will find in st. elizabeth, but the plant looks a bit different,
the flowers on the plant that i have used have always been a purple/blue kinda colour
maybe the leaves are a bit larger as well

i did not see the plant that i use in jamaica on that search .... the one you have posted must be related ....

sorry best i can do for you right now.....if i am able to locate an image i will be sure to post it for you

@ Red spots,no,I do not use any conditioner..I was never told not to.I was also never told to,so I just use what I was told,Which is the Shampoo and the prescription solution. When using the solution, you do not have to shampoo daily.Use the solution once daily.

@ Red Spots: I suffer from psoriasis and Calendula lotion might help you. It is good for psoriasis and eczema. It is made from the marigold flower plant.

Does anyone remember seed under leaf plant? The tea is good for pain-a-belly. Pomegranate skin tea is also good for the same ailment. What about senna pod that use to grow on the seaside? I heard it is also good as a purgative.

Remedy Man what I know is only "hear say" but I think papaya has the same effect as soursop leaf. Also heard that a weed we called Dead And Wake is also good for you. Some people call it Quail Weed because it quails up when you touch it.

Hi I read your posts bush tea and had a good laugh. You see I was sure the goal was to poison me.I drank lots of that mixture and lived healthy the last 69 years. The names I remember are marcopolo, duppypumpkin'martel bush and grapefruit and orange rind; one shot banished a cold forever. Then for sores there was the ballard bush juice from a few leaves. This healed so fast you would be able to use the rest of the plant to sweep the yard.Thank God for modern drugs which have some drawbacks but I do not go hunting for the unknown in the jungle. ONE LOVE.

Thanks for your input Jenny. I heard that dried orange peel made into tea, is good for diabetes. However, the doctors claim that all it does is to disguise the diabetes, giving you a false result when it is actually still present in your body. As for duppy pumpkin....I heard that it is poisonous. Quail pepper leaf was also good for boils.Tamarind leaf was used to make a bath for chicken pox back in the days. Maybe the people with eczema could try this. What about castor oil and packy gut for cleansing the system of bad-blood after an accident or a fall? Anyone with any information on this? Packy gut???? Don't think I would want to drink that one.

Remedy Man; You sound like an old timer when we learned to make do with little.Packy gut aka gourd was used to treat swelling and pain. Mr.Sam Hill treated both animals and individuals for all kinds of illness in their homes. I recall being stuck in my foot by a rain soaked macka after days of pain and swelling Mass Sam was called,he cleaned, drained and bandaged my wound which promptly healed. I must have been about 4 or 5 and later became an R.N.Take away message for me CHILDREN DO LEARN WHAT THEY SEE.ONE LOVE.

Great post. I love hearing the old remedies, keep it coming. Aloes on my nephew's diaper rash worked great, better than steroid creams and such (not that they don't have their place).
