As a Jamaican you know you are getting old if:

You had an exercise book with Queen Elizabeth and her husband on it
(instead of a ring binder).

You used to listen to Redifussion.

You wore Bata crepe to school, and bought Asham at the gate..
(Extra credit if you know what Asham was made of)

You remember that the Lou and Ranny show used to come on at 7:00 PM
on a Sunday.

You know what the initials T. A. D. P. Stand for.

You know who Tony Verity was.

You can name more than two of the characters in a Jonkanoo band.

You know what boxing title Bunny Grant held.

You didn't buy gigs, yo yo's, kites or slingshots in a store .... You
made them yourself.

You know what Fanta and Nu Grape are.

You know what a Woolsley, Humber and Zephyr are.

You got a washout and worm medicine at the end of summer holidays.

Your school graduation was called 'prize-giving.'

You still call Norman Manley airport 'Palisadoes Airport'.

You still have a BOAC bag hidden somewhere in a closet.

You remember when people used to go to the airport, and come back
with a twang.
You still want to go to the airport just to stand on the waving
gallery.

When you hear classical music on the radio you still ask: 'Is who
dead now?'

You still refer to any smooth stretch of road as 'Barber Greene'.
Remember when asphalted roads were nylon roads?

You still use words like 'bine' and 'clyde' and know the difference
between both.

IF YOU CAN RELATE TO ALL OF THE ABOVE, THEN YOU PROBABLY HAVE
LIMACOL AND BAY RUM (MAYBE EVEN A BOTTLE OF FERROL) ON YOUR
NIGHTSTAND, AND VERY POSSIBLY A CHIMMEY UNDER YOUR BED!

Asham is made from parched corn and sugar. Be careful it doesn't choke you though. Anybody remember the malta we used to beet the corn after its parched? Wonder if there are any around? Would love one for my kitchen.

We used to parch coffee in a cast iron pot over a wood fire, stirring as needed Van. When it was roasted right we ground it in a mortar. A magic bullet nowadays. Do I remember corn being parched after it was ground? This was the old time colored or Injin (Indian) corn.

Ground parched corn and peanuts with a taste of cashew and local almonds. Made chewey with coconut oil and wet sugar and spiced up with ginger and rose water. Roll and coat with dark chocolate. Enjoy.

Like your recipe Turey. Sounds like a real nature bar. By the way...is wet sugar still available? Reminds me of the old time story of the old woman who broke her calabash of wet sugar.

We used to get it in Coronation Market Old Timer. The supermarkets used to have it in tins a while back too.

What happened to the old woman after the calabash broke?

I believe, in this context, parch means putting the corn into a pan (skillet) without any liquid, and giving it a good roasting, stirring as you go. It's like dry roasting.
Is sugar-head still available?
