profile

Name:Daisy Viola Smith (Miss P.T.)
Date of Birth: October 11, 1925
Birth place: Isle of Pines, Cuba
Parents: The late Mr.& Mrs.Reuben Clarke

She was married to the late Reginald Smith and is the mother of four sons; namely, Kingsley(adopted) , Richard, Ronnie and Dale. She has three grandsons and seven granddaughters.

Mrs. Smith came to Jamaica at the age six. She attended the Sandy Bank Elementary School. She was successful in the Second and Third Year Jamaica Local Examination . At the age of sixteen, she became a Pupil Teacher and at that time was given the Middle Division ( Second and Third class) of the school to teach all subject areas. At age nineteen, she became a pre- trained teacher, and during this time, she sat and passed the first year External Teachers' Examination . She further pursued teacher training at the Moneague Teachers' College in St. Ann where she was successful in obtaining a Teachers' certificate in Primary Education. Mrs. Smith then resumed her teaching career at the Sandy Bank Primary School where she taught for thirty eight years.

Mrs Smith said she entered the teaching profession because of her love for children. She taught from the First Grade to the Fifth Grade but most of her years were spent in the First Grade. She enjoyed teaching her students and had a good rapport with the Principal and her fellow colleagues. Even though she is now retired, Mrs. Smith likes to be abreast of what is happening at the school and shares her joy in its achievements.

Mrs. Smith is highly recognised in her community and is regarded as a typical role model. She was exceptionally happy to learn that some past students were desirous of her to be profiled on the Treasure Beach Website. She would like to take this opportunity to tell her past students that she loves them dearly and wishes for them all the best in their endeavours. She would also like to hear from them.

My first day at Sandy Bank school my cousin gave me a piece of chewing gum. During my first class PT told me to take the gum out my mouth; no way was I going to give up that wrigley's chewing gum. I got a backsiding my first 10 minutes in school(and I lost the gum too). What I could not understand was how my sister-in-law would do that to me. But that's her, always fair and firm, yet oh so caring. May you find happiness in the fond memories you left with all that met you.

I am proud to be your cousin. I am Uncle Claff's and Aunt G's daughter Carol Reynolds-Saunders and I live in Atlanta. Georgia.
Great job David.

So good to see you Miss P.T, you look wonderful. I'll always remember that day back in grade four, someone was teasing me about my terrible eyesight as usual, I came to you crying and you hugged me and told me not to worry because I was still pretty and smart and that the time others wasted teasing me was the time I should spend doing well in school. U taught us not only academics, but valuable life lessons as well, I thank you and applaud you for your contribution and dedication to your work and to us all.

To the family of Ms. PT.
I was saddened to hear of your loss. Please know how sorry I am.

2009 I was in Treasure Beach and went to see Ms. PT at her home. I spent quite a while with her and talked about many things. She mentioned that she wished more of her past students would come to see her. She also said she is not asking for anything from anyone, but to see them and hear how they are doing would pleased her most. I took many pictures of her and we laughed and cried together about many things. She was my first Teacher.

I am very sad. I think of PT all the time and am only sorry that I never had the chance to see her before she passed.

May her soul rest in peace.
