Mrs. Maureen Sherman Powell affectionaltely called "Shaw Shaw" was born in Treasure Beach to her loving mother Keturah Clarke. She has one brother and one sister. She has been running the M&D Grocery Store located in Calabash Bay for 26 years along with her husband Delvin. They have two children, Delvin Jr. age 26 and Patrice age 25 and a grandson, Kylan 7 months.

Mrs. Powell attended the Sandy Bank Primary School, Newell Junior Secondary School and the Black River Commercial High School where her favourite subject was social studies. She believes that discipline and punctuality are lacking in school now compared to when she was a student.

For her, growing up in Treasure Beach was a pleasure as the people were more attached and everyone felt as if they belonged to one family. She is pleased with the changes that have occured in Treasure Beach but as most persons she believes that there needs to be improvement in the public facilities and more job opportunities, particularly for the youth. Mrs. Powell said that in days gone by the children had more respect for the elderly who could chastise them on matters to whom they belong. She would promote Treasure Beach to tourists by telling them about the remoteness of the community offering peace and quiet with fabulous beaches.

Her message to the youths is stay off drugs, keep in school, learn well and have respect for others. Mrs. Powell loves everything that is nice. Her favourite colours are pink and blue and she enjoys the evenings best. Her favourite past time is reading. Mrs. Powell enjoys helping the unfortunate and does so willing as she wants to see them happy. She gives freely to those in need.

As a child living near to her I can say she is the most loving person I know. She is always counselling me on how to conduct myself on the road and at school. She is a real role model to us as children.
