Kathleen Smith, otherwise known as Mama Genie, was born in Great Bay, St. Elizabeth. Her favourite food is chicken with rice and peas. She is a member of the Salvation Army Church.

She remembered life as being very difficult in terms of getting access to public service such as transportation and social ammenities such as piped water and electricity. This, she explained, made life very difficult. While growing up she stated that she had to go to springs to get water to wash, cook, clean and drink. She further states that in order for her to get transportation to go to the major towns, she had to wait for long hours to get the bus. She went on to say lamp and candle was the major source of light during the nights. She also explained that while growing up wood fire was the major source of fuel for cooking.

For her the difference in living now when compared to back when she was younger was that there was no crime and violence, however, she stated that life today in terms of living conditions is much better in that she has got access to more social ammenities now than then. She further explains that there was no piped water, electricity and telephone while growing up as a young girl.

The community of Great Bay in which she still resides is a very quiet and welcoming neighborhood. The people are courteous and the beach is wonderful especially during the summer period when it is very hot. Crime and violence in the community is zero percent this facilitating freedom and relaxation.

She states that tourists should visit Great Bay because it offers all the facilities for a well deserved vacation. It is very quiet and peeaceful which makes vacationing very free and exciting.

One bit of advice she has for young people is to behave themselves, keep away from crime and violence and to the girls don't get pregnant.

Hi Mama Ginie,

Im travelling around Jamaica at present and will be visiting your area soon. Im Irish and your memories of growing up in Jamaica remind me of my own Mother and Fathers stories of growing up in Ireland. You have a lot in common except the weather :-) Conditions for you all were extreamly hard under British rule as they were for many British people too. I think your advice to the youth is right and i thank you for your thoughts. Paul
