This month we will look at Aletha Clarke, otherwise known as Leitha (pronounced Leeta). She was born in the district of Billy's Bay on March 14, 1933. Her parents were Alva and Almena Clarke. This is a remarkable woman who has not only lived in Jamaica but England as well. She can now be regarded as a returning resident to the land of her birth.

Miss Leitha as we call her, loves the colours pink, red, and white and her favourite food is curry goat and roti. She recalls the days when she was growing up with ten brothers and three sisters in the family. They had to work very hard. They had no running water so they had to carrry water from the well for miles on their heads. This they had to do every morning before going to school. They had no liight so they had to read at nights using the good old "home sweet home" lamps. Children she said had to have manners to everyone both young and old. Although there were no street lights they could walk at nights without fear.

She attended the Sandy Bank Elementary School along with her brothers and sisters and her favourite teacher was Mrs. Daisy Smith known as Miss P.T.

There has been much improvement to the community in terms of running water, and although the roads need repairs, it is better now than it was then. Her greatest desire is to see people showing more love and kindness towards each other instead of love for material things. People need to fear God more and love God and in so doing life would be worth living. She feels that if we love each other more and be kinder to each other then our country would be a better place. "Parents", she said, "should take more interest in their children. Young people should listen more to older people, go to church and really praise God and read their Bible everyday. Pray and ask God for guidance."

I really enjoyed talking to this citizen of Treasure Beach.

Hello Miss Leitha!
It's so nice to see your smiling face on here this month! I am freezing over here in Vermont and wishing I was there, walking up the road past your beautiful yard. It couldn't be more perfect that some of your gorgeous flowers are peeking their faces in the photo too!
We would all do well to follow the advice you gave Kedesha. Wouldn't life be sweet then?
Sending my best wishes to you. Hope to see you before too long!
Love,
Jenni Reid (Joska's wife)

If it is, she has grown up so much ! You look lovely and you write VERY well!

I think there's been a mix-up in pictures, for as beautiful as the girl in the picture above is, she isn't Kedesha Watson of Billy's Bay, unless my eyes deceive me. However, Kedesha did tell me just last evening that she did an interview with Miss Leitha(Leeta)Clarke so I am looking forward to congratulating Kedesha on her fine writing when she gets home from school today. Please double check the picture. Thanks.

Hi Aunt Leta, happy belated b.day i will catch to it later in the year i promise. It has been seven years. You still look lovely for your age aunty. And your garden, wow. Dian wouldnt be the woman she is to day if it was nt for people like you, with a warm heart and caring arms. You are one of the only senior citizens in treasure who really deserve respect. The only one who stands up for what is right. Even when you get upset about someone who did wrong you still forgive them. You truly have Gods blessings and my thanks. Dian.
