profile,1

Mr. Sylvan Honeyghan is from Flagaman, Treasure Beach P.O. He is a farmer.

His farms are located at Flagaman and Hounslow which is about 5 miles away. Together he has 5 acres. He farms tomatoes, melon, pumpkin and escallion. He sells his crops to higglers and goes to the Savannah La Mar market to sell his vegetables himself. He has four persons to work on his farm.

Some problems he faces are: drought, lack of storage, shortage of funds and the unexplained dying of melon plants after growing. He solves these problems by buying water from Rapid Response (which are tank trucks that will bring the water to you) and the others he seeks help from friends.

He has been a farmer for twenty years. He enjoys his work as a farmer very much.

Nice work Monique, and good luck achieving your goals to be a doctor. Mr. Sylvan HOneyghan looks like a genuinely happy man, in spite of all the obstacles in his farming. Water is so precious, especially in this area. All the best and what a fine example to all. Thank You, and Respect.

monique: that is a nice, succinct sketch you wrote about yr uncle. ask him if he knows about mulching his vegetables, to conserve water...mulch can be dead hay or straw, or newspapers, or plastic. mulching keeps weed down and reduces the need for water. :D

Sylvan all the best it's nice to see someone from Flagaman being profiled. I wish you all the best with your melon,as Flagaman always has the best watermelon, as a young person growing up in the fishing Village of Frenchman, I use to look forward to getting watermelon from Flagaman, after eating that raw fish u know.

When I see that blue house it tells me its right at the steep corner when you leave crossroad and entering Flagaman, and I left 22 years ago .Eupheme if you are who I think you are don't tell me you forget Flagaman already.Memories don't leave like people do.

Wow, I love all of the responses! I have just printed them out and will bring them to Mr. Honeyghan today. To answer a few questions from the above comments: First, I agree that it is great to see a farmer on the Profile. Just to let you know, it is the student that chooses who to profile, so I had no say in the matter, but am loving the canteloupe I was given when I went to his house to take his picture! Second, the farmers sure do know about mulch farming. They use a grass called guinea grass for mulching. Form more info check out the History & Culture page and see the paragraph about farming. Thanks again for all the comments.

Hi Eupheme & Yardie,
The photograph with Sylvan was taken close to his house, in the lane leading up to Marcus Church. If you look behind him you can see Dinalda (Boysie's mom) house (painted in blue. The flat land in the distance is Cross Road and the hill is Round Hill.
I have fond memories of visiting my grandmother Iso and grandaunt Mildred whose house is behind Silvan's.
Good job Monique. Ony believe in yourself, you can be all that you wann be.
Big up Sylvan, I am proud of you.

Nice to see you on the internet sylvan.i know the problems faced by farmers in st elizabeth. My father;Tur was a farmer for many years and i know the problems he faced. When my dad took sick in 1999 i took up the mantle of managing his farm and it was by no means an easy task. After giving it my best shot for the better part of 3 years i gave up and came to england to try my hand at other ventures.Flagaman farmers to me are the best in the world and I was proud to be apart of it for that short period of time.I AM EVEN MORE PROUD OF THE FACT THAT MY FATHER CHAMPIONED THE CAUSE FOR THIRTY ODD YEARS.
Sylvan also has 2 nice daughters;the younger one who was my girlfriend for five and a half years so it was especialy good seeing him on the internet

Hi Pasta-UK

Just checked in and saw your message posted, and yes, I'm the same Oral that attended Newell Secondary (all those years ago). Now don't forget there were two of us with the same name, Oral Lee and myself.
Get intouch if you can, until such time,
God bless.

Hi Redstripe

I have been thinking and I don't think the tailor can catch Apple J she is world class.

Perhaps we should put Apple J in the Guiness book of Record!!

Nothing surprises me any more, I have seen and heard it all.

Respect Pasta
