Once again we feature another of our senior citizens, no other than Roddy Swaby well know as Captain. This tall handsome man was born in Frenchman's District, Treasure Beach on October 10, 1914. He has lived and worked all his life in the community as a fisherman.

So many people he has fed through his kindness by giving them most time a nightly meal free of cost. Mas Roddy was married to Miss Zelda who predeceased him and together they had 12 children. Today Mas Roddy is living quite comfortable as his children make sure he has all the comforts in the world.

Mas Roddy considers the olden days as better. He says people were more loving, sharing, and giving. People shared on others burdens. When some planted a crop or killed a goat or a pig the whole neighbourhood would get their share of food and meat. Just the same with fish.

He has seen many years and the development of the community. But with this development the love in the people's hearts are decreasing and so he is not happy with it at all. His favourite meal is fish, creamed potato and vegetables. He remembers the lovely meals his wife used to prepare for him and he misses this. He says his wife was a great homemaker. This man is a man of few words but his advice to the young people is to live clean and stay clear of drugs and they will live a long life. In spite of the many operations he has taken he is still in a sound mind, he can move about and for that he gives God the glory.

Hi Mass Roddy,
You might not remember me but I am Hazel (Dudley Wright's daughter) he used to train horses in TB for Mr. Muirhead and we used to visit him there and we would come to your house - I can still remember the gungo/bean suop and fish dinners that Miss Zelda used to prepare - boy I could eat some of that soup with bammy right now. There was this friendship between us - the Wright and Swaby girls and I actually had a crush on one of your sons - can't remember which one now but I think it was John. You look great. God bless you.

He is one of three siblings who are in their 90's. The other two are his sisters, Aunt Jo (Rosetta) and Auntie Berry.
This must be a bit of a record in Treasure Beach!

My earliest memories of Mas Roddy was fishing with him and my father, Dr. Richard Harris. To me he was the greatest fisherman alive and I always think of him when I'm fishing.....he was a very kind man and I miss him very much.

....and yes miss Zelda was a great cook, especially her kingfish and lobster dishes. Miss her too!
