I just finished reading these interesting whale facts @ the link above;and started thinking that whale watching could be a very profitable addition to the tourism sector. In the US, it's a huge tourist draw to Massachessetts(particularly Cape Cod)in the Fall season. In Hawaii whale watching is also big and profitable. So, why not Jamaica?
According to these articles, Dominican Republic earned over $5 millionUSD from said industry in 1998. It seems that since the whales migrate to Caribbean waters during the winter which is also the high tourist season it would make a good compliment to the tourism sector. As for the south coast, it may be another way in which fisherman may use the sea to make $$$ being mindful not to get too close. In Hawaii there are regulation that govern the distance for the protection of the whales since the engine fuel by-products are toxic to the whales. The Jamaican government could be looking to develop whale watching as a viable economic resource.

I have never in my years in Treasure Beach seen a whale. I have seen manatees and many dolphins. When I lived on the North coast in Duncans for 3 years before going to the south coast (14 years ago) I saw ONE whale only, and that was very far to the north offshore.
I am not sure that I have heard of whales off the south coast of Jamaica - I would be curious to know if anyone else had.
My ex-husband who was a fisherman for many years out of Billy's Bay never said he ever saw a whale either.
Anyone in T.B. ever seen a whale??
