I know that a foreigner can stay for 6 months, but is this 6 months total in a year or can you leave for a few days and return?

You can apply for an extension in Mo Bay (it is the closest I ever found). You need a passport that is still valid and will not expire in the amount of time that you are asking, there is a fee, and you may have to prove that you have enough money to sustain you time, and proof of your address while in Jamaica. They will also ask you why you want to stay, and a battery of other questions.

I have friends who just booked a cheap flight to Florida (via cheap Spirit Airlines) and then returned. That is another way.

I believe that you can leave for a day and return.

Imagine if we started to accept refugees from up north.

We did after the American revolution. Royalists where welcomed and assisted in patenting land by contributions from the public purse.

One Mr Frog, a tailor from Charleston was given land on the Black River. When he complained of the swampy and croc risk area he was heard by the powers that were.

Thanks to Dr John Cross for the above info.

Canada, You may get Jamaican citizenship for a child of Jamaican lineage who was born outside of Jamaican soil. You can do so at the Jamaican Consulate nearest to your home if you reside abroad. It takes over a year to receive a response, I have been waiting in excess of one year five months. As stated above; you can get an unconditional landing for a child of Jamaican parent(s) in Kingston and you receive it the same day provided you have all the necessary documents. Best of luck!

Make sure you get ALL the correct information from the Canadian High Commission BEFORE you proceed. When I lived there with my daughter (Jamaican father, but she was born in Canada), her father and I were married and living in Jamaica with our child. To avoid having to leave with her every 6 months, or getting extensions to stay in Jamaica, I looked into her getting "landed" status. In Kingston, I was advised that I would have to surrender her Canadian passport to proceed with landed status. For travel we could get her a Jamaican Passport.
That, to me seemed like a bad thing to do. She has more ability for travel, etc. in her life with Canadian citizenship and passport. Make sure you get all the correct info so that you do not compromise the child's Canadian status and priviledges.

That is very good advice Canadian also. Is it possible to have dual citizenship with Canada and Jamaica? That is what I have being a citizen of both Jamaica and America.

By unconditional landing I mean no limit on the amount of time you are permited to stay in the country. Citizenship by lineage is a separate issue. Canada, when you use the term "landing", what do you mean? Want to make sure we are speaking about the same thing. I was in Kingston last year where they were willing to give my five year old "an unconditional landing" without any stipulations of surrendering documents. She is a US citizen, and currently awaiting her Jamaican citizenship while residing in the US. for further clarification you may contact Jamaican authorities

Hi Rebecca

Yes, it is possible to have dual citizenship. If born in Canada, the only way to lose your citizenship is to request to have it cancelled.

Canadian also, I would have been very nervous about that. It doesn't seem like you were given the correct or full information

I would like to get dual citizenship (US & Jamaica).
I am a US citizen by birth. I am married to a Jamaican but we currently reside in the US. We own land in Jamaica.

I need to be living in Jamaica for how long to apply?

Curious, I would suggest you either contact the nearest Consulate General of Jamaica to your home in the US or contact the Immigration, Citizenship and Passport Division in Kingston as I listed earlier on this thread.

Thank you all.

I do not have a Jamaican parent.

I am married to a Jamaican. We do own land in Jamaica.

Am I eligible for dual citizenship?

Do I have to be living in Jamaica ?(I plan to eventually spend the winter in Jamaica and summer in the US.

Curious, I was married to a Jamaican, and own land in Jamaica, and still had to come and go, or get extensions (I do not have a Jamaican parent, and I did not go for dual citizenship). However, people like Rebecca, have made a living in Jamaica, and put in their hard work and time getting to know and love the country, and then become dual citizens. I still remember how proud Rebecca looked in the pictures from her citizenship ceremony aposted a while back! As stated by her earlier in this thread, she has dual citizenship (US/Jamaican)

Hi curious, just wanted to tell you what we were told by the friendliest immigration officer ever at Mo Bay in Feb.I am a UK citizen married to a Jamaican born UK citizen. My husband asked about unconditional landing and,as has been mentioned previously, was told just to go to Kingston with his birth certificate and his passport would be stamped unconditional. When I asked where I stand as his wife, she said I am entitled to the same rights as my husband. We plan eventually to spend longer periods in Jamaica so this proved to be brilliant advice.Hope that helps.

We are going to the Jamaican Embassy in Miami this week (I accidently washed my step son's passport). He needs a new one to go a yard and spend the summer with his mother.

I'll ask about it there.
