My son and I will be visiting for 6 days 4/13 to 4/19 and I'm trying to stay in the $50 to $75 per day range. I've narrowed choices down to Calabash House and Cacona Villa & Beach Cottage and now i'm having a hard time deciding on which one they both look nice from the pictures on the website. Can anybody tell me more about these places all opinions are appreciated or please make suggestions of other places to stay within the price I stated the only stipulation I have is I would prefer a place that I can open the door and be on the beach and I need internet or Wi Fi and a kitchenette because I would like to keep food cost down by preparing some breakfasts and lunches myself.
Open the door and be on the beach, in your price range, I would suggest Golden Sands. I stayed there and it the hospitality is great.
How about Golden Sands, its within your price range, right on the beach, has internet connection. There are several kitchenette areas. It also offers hot water. There is a shop right next door and a small diner wich offers good food at a great price. Golden sands also has its own restuarant now as well!!! The sunsets from here are just amazing! You can catch the fishermen at the end of the beach as well who you can order fresh fish from or maybe a bout trip.Check it out
Both places are great options. Cocona is a little more secluded, and the beach is a little further from the 'busy' area where the fishermen come in (But, of course, to say 'busy' in TB is a bit of a misnomer!). Calabash House is situated on the main road and is closer to things like Dougie's bar and Jack Sprat. The beach there is gorgeous.
You'll enjoy your stay in either place. James Cottage (further down the road from Cocona) is also inexpensive and right on the beach.
Bryan, Treasure Beach is WIFI so you should be able to use your laptop, provided it's WIFI.
Bryan, I would strongly recommend Treasure Trove Cottage as I have stayed there many times as well as at other villas in TB.I found Treasure Trove to be the best in terms of comfort and location 1)view:

They do not advertise on TB.Net any longer but these are Rebecca's(webmaster) statements regarding advertisement :http://www.treasurebeach.net/guide/default.cfm
Whenever I've stayed there the price was negotiatiable, so give them a call @1876-895-3363
One difference: Cacona and Calabash House are smaller places. Golden Sands is bigger and a bit more 'party central' and a little less personal in my opinion.
Depends on what you're looking for.
The descriptions of Calabash House and Cacona above are pretty accurate.
hooked on TB:
What do you mean by 'Treasure Beach is WIFI'? Did you mean to say Calabash House or Cacona, both of which have some sort of WI-FI?
For the record, there are no community WI-FI hotspots in the area.
Also, the link you gave for Rebecca's words on our advertising take you to the home page. Can you repost the link.

Hi--
I notice that Treasure Trove Cottage (http://www.treasuretrovecottage.com/index.html) isn't listed on this site, and that worries me a little. I've found the info here so helpful. Does the fact that Treasure Trove isn't here mean that you guys don't like it? Should I not be booking my vacation there?
I stayed at Jake's the last time I was down, but was looking for something a little less expensive this time around, as I'll be staying by myself. Any info anyone can share will be welcome and most appreciated.
Thanks!
Retta

The decision to advertise on TB.Net is left to the the owner of the establishment. If you do not see something advertised here, it is simply because the establishment has not taken an ad out with us.
I copy and paste from TB.Net because the link to this page defaults to the home page.
By WI-FI, I mean that I have observed other visitors using their Wi-FI laptops in TB establishments that do not provide internet access(ISP). There have also been many past postings advising that Treasure Beach has WI-FI,hopefuly this info isn't incorrect because the next time I'm there I hope to use my laptop.
If your choice is between Cocona and Calabash House, I would suggest the latter. Cocona seems to be in a state of mid construction and the ambiance is'nt as nice as Calabash House. To me Golden Sands is a concrete block and not as quiet as the other two. Calabash House has a better swimming beach than Cocona which has rocks and reef in front of it. Calabash House just seems a little better kept and put together. Good luck
I stayed at the Calabash House with a group of people the week after Christmas and had a wonderful time. Dawn is a great cook and Liz is a lovely, lively, host. The house is right on the beach and there is plenty of shade in the yard if you don't like to be in the sun.
The bedrooms are large and the house is very open and airy. Often there is a nice breeze blowing through the house. I don't know anything about Cacona Villa, but you can't go wrong with the Calabash House.
Treasure Beach is not WI-FI. If you, for instance, see someone sitting at Jake's using their own laptop, it is because JAKE'S has WI-FI internet service and people who are using it are either staying there or are paying for a meal or a cup of coffee. Lots of places in Treasure Beach have internet, but many do not. Of those that do, some are WI-FI, but many are not. Finally, establishments provide very different speeds of internet service. I suggest you be specific in asking the establishment before you book and not assume anything if internet on premises is important to you.
Does anybody know of a website for Golden Sands?
Thank you all for the info its all been very helpful
i stay at Vikings House in great bay.it has internet, rooms with kitchen ,is about 100 meters from the beach, in your price range. Steffi,Vikings wife organises things(walks, bike riding).but best of all it has Viking and Family. pure joy and i miss it
You should be able to click on Golden Sands site in the where to stay section. I have never stayed there so I can not say anything one way or the other.
I have stayed at Vikings House and had no complaints.
I had a problem at Cacona (the woman that lives there came in very early in the morning to use the washer. We heard the door open at around 6 am (we were in the down stairs bedrooms. It scared the crap out of us)
Golden Sands does not advertise on this web site.

I did not know that they no longer advertise on this site. I know that they used to.
I completely agree with simplybrett. I love Vikings House and the family surrounding and it is so affordable.
Jeannie,
What is the beach at Vikings House like? From the pictures the bach in front of the Calabash House looks perfect
I'd forgotten about Treasure Trove. I stayed there three years ago and it was great. So close to the water, gorgeous property, really great cottage. The website's down, though, so you have to call Coot directly: 876-895-3363.
I stayed at Calabash house the first two weeks of February. Dawn and Theresa are great. Dawn will do the shopping and cook breakfast and dinner or not depending on what you would like. They have WI-FI and you can do your own cooking if you like. The beach is nice and the body surfing was very cool. Nice place, nice people. Jerry

Bryan, the Golden Sands website is not up and running at the moment. You can email them at goldensandsguesthouse@yahoo.com or call them on 00 1 876 965 0167
I rented Cocona with Mrs R. (above)
Cacona has been in construction for some time now. We got a good rate at the time because of that, but paid for all the rooms with the understanding that WE would have the WHOLE house to ourselves.
The woman who rented there (in her own apt) was in & out whenever she felt the need. At times walking right past us on the veranda and into the house with no explanation, just a wave and a hello.
It made me very uncomfortable. I finally said something to her and she didn't come back into the house.
The only other problem I had were her dogs. They were nice enough, but she kept one of them penned outside my bedroom window. The window was at ground level so he was always right there above my head.
The laundry incident was most disturbing because the laundry room is right outside the lower level bedrooms (the only finished bedrooms at the time)and we had no idea this woman would have the run of the place.
I had voiced these issues to the owners on our return, but never received a response
Other than that, I enjoyed the house. The veranda is lovely and the views from the roof are spectacular.Great space for gathering with friends. You can always walk to a better swimming beach.
Maybe the arrangements with the tenant has changed.
Just to let you know Kate, 'that woman' and her dogs have not been living at Cacona for about 3 years now.
They don't have an official website. You can e-mail them at goldensandsguesthouse@yahoo.com to request pricing and availability. If you're looking for pictures of Golden Sands you can find some on my private website at http://www.soon-come.de/Fotos.html, but the descriptions there are only in German.
bryan43016:
The beach at Vikings is about a 2 minute walk through the field. It is a small very private cove. There is nearby Great Bay beach which might be a 5-10 minute walk. This beach is also nice but the waves a a bit more fierce. Just curious if that is you zip code behind your name. Dublin Ohio? I am in Kenton Ohio.

The beach at Vikings is a small uncrowded spot. Check Viking's web site and there should be photo's. You could also walk to Great Bay Beach.
It's a shame you didn't get to talk to the lady at Cacona when she was living there. We met her when we were staying in Calabash Bay - I believe she was a teacher? She was obviously well educated and we were really impressed by the passion she had for her profession and the fact she was passing on her vast knowledge to the local school children. She was fantastic with our kids. She spoke to them like adults and told them all about Jamaica, bringing the history of the island to life for them. It's a shame to hear she's no longer there. Anyone know what's happened to her? Is she still teaching on the island?
That is my old zip code behind my name I lived in Columbus for 6 1/2 years finally got tired of the winters and moved south first to Charleston, SC then onto Estero, FL (between Ft. Myers and Naples) where I live now
Hi Kicki, beautiful pics. Greetings to you and Uli.
Thanks for the update Rebecca.
I had no problem with the woman herself. I'm sure she is a wonderful person. She seemed pleasant enough. We did chat with her a few times.
My point was that we had an agreement to rent the entire house. No one told us that anyone had access to, or free run of the space we rented.
Had we known that was the case we would have gone elsewhere.
And no one ever replied to me when it was brought to the owner's attention.
As I said above, other than that, I enjoyed the villa & the location.
Thank you all for your input it was very helpful. I've finally decided on Calabash House as the place to stay
Bryan
You finally made the best choice, I grew up in the area and know the two ladies personally, they are great ladies, very kind hearted and caring. You definately will enjoy your stay, walking distance to just about everywhere. You have a great flight and do enjoy your stay. Tell us all about it when you get back.
