I was thinking of all the men that went missing on the Snow Boy many, many years ago. Maybe they are among these men and, if so what a rejoicing that would be. I would suggest a special "prayer gathering" being held in Treasure Beach and invite one- and -all to attend because, fishermen has gone missing from all different areas in Jamaica.
If this is true I realy hope the Cuban Government will find it in their hearts to set them all free.

Jail is not a place for anyone to be especially for 30 years. Does any of these people want to be found? Anyone of them ever write home,I know of no jail that does not allow leters to be written to their love ones as long as it is not abusive, insulting or deforming to the government of the country. Well, may be Guantanomo Bay USA. May be these people are ashame of been known to be in jail. Whatever landed these men or women in Cuban jail. Can the government of Jamaica publish the names of these people and then may be the families can find a way of getting them out.
Shock or not, we need to find out why are these people are in jail so that, others will not fall a prey to the same plight. Stay home, stay legal in all that you do.Obey the laws of others countries, your goverment may not be able to get you out if land yourself in trouble. Keep your nose clean and respect yourself. Just imagine how many Jamaicans are in jail in USA and in England. What a shame. We are only taking about Cuba now.

The Ministry Foreign Affairs does have a list of the incarcerated persons in Cuba. I spoke to two different persons from the Ministry today and they assured me the Ministry has been in contact with all the family members of these prisoners. They also informed me that their list is updated whenever there is a new case and the family is contacted immediately.
In order to check with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on a suspected case of incarceration you will need to contact them in writing as they will no give that sort of information over the phone for security reasons. Please contact them via this E-mail dcamfaja@cwjamaica.com
You will need to provide the full and correct name of the person in question. The approximate time they went missing and your contact information so the Ministry can get back in touch.
I hope this was helpful, Nickell.

Thank you very much Nickell for this information. I think it is important to reiterate the following statement:

The Ministry has been in contact with all the family members of these prisoners. They also informed me that their list is updated whenever there is a new case and the family is contacted immediately.

Nickell told me the gentleman he spoke with said he was swamped with calls from Treasure Beach this morning and he certainly understood why as he would want to know as well.

So again, please email dcamfaja@cwjamaica.com with your inquiries and please keep us posted.

I don't want to kill anybody's hope, but it is best not to get carried away by emotions here. Take the practical steps that are being suggested. Bear in mind as well that it is not likely that everyone who went missing at sea over the last 30 years is in a Cuban jail. As hard as it might be to accept (especially since you have not seen the bodies) it is highly likely that most of them DID perish at sea.
If there is even one who is alive and is in Cuba or any other country, however, that is reason enough for rejoicing accompanied by appropriate action to secure the person's safe return to his family and country.
Speaking personally, I am also pursuing the matter and will be only too happy to report any positive results.

Why would Cuba jail fishermen from jamaica?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By DrO on Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - 06:00 pm: Edit Post

"Don't get it", It is called Territorial Waters, under the International Law, one cannot just get in aboat and cross over to Cuba. Just like the Jamaican Government will not allow Haitian or any other country to violate their Maritine Law. Laws of the Seas laws. One of many reasons for Visas, If you get caught in USA waters, you know what will happen. I am not sure if it is 50, 100, 200 miles out, that it is suppose to be part of a state or one own country. We are assumming that these men are fishermen, without knowing what are the crimes committed, if any, if they are not fishermen. Relatives, look into what got your people in trouble and see if a Cuban lawyer or a Jamaican lawyer conversant with Cuba Laws may help you.

Why would the Cuban government keep Jamaican fishermen in jail for over 30 years, for violation of entering their territorial waters , when they\re not treacherous to the state of Cuba ,in the eighties i know of fishermen who got lost and end-up in Cuba and they were held for a few days interrogate then they were set free and just a couple of months ago it was in the news paper where men were found with gun in their boat by the Cuban and they turn over to the Jamaican government by the Cuban authority ,also Jamaica has develop a friendly relationship with Cuba , so i see no reason why the Jamaican government did not negotiate for their release, anyway ever since Snow Boy been missing there is alway the saying that the fishermen are been held in Cuban jail ,i hope its all true this will be a blessing to see those who has disappear for so long are still alive.

'Allah Akbar!' was used by Islamic Africans probably from the 16th C in Jamaica KULLA.

The Catholic Iberians and later Protestant British encouraged the use of Deo and God.

I hope that we do not become confused with the useage of words from different languages that refer to the same thing.

Agua and water, two different words...same liquid that quenches thirst.

May our actions speak our goodness and words and cultural useages do not confuse.

I've expanded on this small point as recent international conflics revolve around interpretation of the intent of the INFINITE by finite beings stubborn in their rightness and mixing local culture with religious formulation.

As dawah (the Islamic duty of invitation to Islam) is active locally, I hope conflicts based on finite mythology do not emerge and we all benefit from wisdom from THE INFINITE and not tales invented by mortals, Christian, Islamic, Wiccan or other.

Back to the topic...when I was in Santiago de Cuba, I was told that Jamaica fishermen from the N Coast were given the choice of going back to Ja or staying in Cuba by Fidel.

Travel between Ja and Cuba would have been common from Taino times and continued until recently.

I was welcomed as a Jamaican and mixed with the local community. I hope that any Jamaicans in prison that need assistance will have their cases publicised.

If Cuban authorities read or hear of this maybe they will be gracious enough to send the list of incarcerated Jamaicans instead of some of us going the more complex route suggested in a previous post.

For a Cuban, one of the hardest things to acquire is a fishing license. The reason is simple. Boats are the easiest way off the island. Naturally any foreign fisherman is seen as a profound threat to the Cuban people. Unfortunately for the Jamaicans in question, there is no habeas corpus in Cuba.
Fascista and fascist, two different words same meaning.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Rebecca on Friday, March 14, 2008 - 09:58 pm: Edit Post

I called the ministry myself this afternoon, and spoke with a gentleman who was extremely helpful and understanding. He said in all the years of fishermen found adrift in Cuban waters, or for that matter any waters of the Caribbean, including Honduras, and other parts of Latin America, they have never had a situation where the fishermen were not returned to Jamaica. He further stated the relations between Cuba and Jamaica have always been extremely good, especially when it came to humanitarian matters.

The process is, when any Jamaican is found, the Cuban government notifies the Jamaican Embassy in Cuba. The embassy then notifies the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters here in Jamaica. They then immediately contact family members here to notify them of the whereabouts of their family member. If the Jamaican has been found with contraband or has committed a crime, they are giving legal counsel and given a trial where a representative of the Jamaican Embassy is present. If convicted, they will serve their term and then will be released back to Jamaica at the end of their term served.

During their incarceration they are in direct contact with family members and are even allowed visits with family members coming over from Jamaica carrying care packages. There is no Jamaican currently serving a prison term in Cuba whose family has not been notified.

Although it would be wonderful news to find out our loved one may still be alive, I am sorry to say, this is more than likely not the case of him being in a Cuban jail. The ministry has asked me to convey the message to you that although they certainly understand your wanting hope and they sympathize with you, there is no way your family would not have been contacted if your loved one was in a Cuban jail.

We ultimately make contact with the Cuban authority, and was granted access to talk with him. He told us that he will be coming out soon, we are still in contact with him.

Can someone explain the likelyhood of fishermen from TB, embarking to the Pedro Keys or Central America, ending up in Cuban waters?

I believe Cuba is to the north-north-west of Jamaica, the keys and Central America are approx south-south-west of Jamaica (almost in the opposite direction), so how would such a trip end up in Cuba? Was Cuba allowed to pouch in International Waters and randomly capture citizens from other islands on a whim? And why would they hold these people prisoners all this time? Seems a little strange.

Turey, I've always appreciated your comments here...even the ones I didn't understand :-) You've always seemed to say your piece without being mean and with respect for others. Maximum respect for that.

But I have to strongly disagree with anyone who holds Castro or his system in high regard. He's a dictator who has hurt his own people just to keep himself in power.

During my 2 weeks there, every Cubano I talked to ended the conversation with "its just a matter of time" with the understanding that it meant until Castro dies and they can start living normal lives. They didn't want to say it out loud. No free speech there.

My 2 cents,
Eric

And....I did not see any screw face or hear of malnutrition, my host was a doctor. Obesity with its accompanying illnesses rules in N America. Screw face is the norm there too.

Most importantly, everyone seemed ready to dance and sing, at least in Santiago.

True this was 17 years ago, the Santeria Priestess, the old boys and girls I met may have passed on and the youths who drove me on magical mystery tours may be hungering for KFC, Golden Arches and bling.

Time will tell.

Thanks Eric, I wonder how the hard times have been amplified by the trade embargo?

I also wonder what Cuba would be like with those Fidel displaced still running things?

Their education, health, arts, culture, organic farming and urban gardens are some aspects we all could learn from.

If you or anyone is unclear about what I post please let me know.

Best, turey.

I have an apology to make.

I was reminded by one of the two moderators of this board (the one that's not named Eric :-) that TBNet does not allow political messages to be posted. I went over that line and was wrong to to do so.

Instead of erasing my message and the two of Turey's that came into response to it and risk looking like we're trying to cover up my mistake, we'll leave them there as an example of what not to do. We'll also not approve any other posts that come in after it.

Of course, I still hold the same views. Turey, if you'd like to discuss them privately send me an email at webmaster@treasurebeach.net. As I said in my original post, I've always appreciated the way you reason and I'd be interested in a non-public discussion of the issue.

-Eric
