This old tree has become a symbol of treasure beach, it has probably been there for a hundred years, and if protected, it could be there for
another hundred, but every time i log on to this site, i see people relaxing on it branches, at that rate it probably wont last too long, now i am well aware that there may be a few more urgent projects to be concerned with, But every time i gaze on those knarled twisted branches, that have withstood the rigors of time, weather and sea, it reminds me of the people of treasurebeach, of thier hardwork and suffering to raise thier children, with dignity, instilling in them, the principles of honesty and integrity, so that they stand out wherever in the world that they may go. Want to know the people of treasurebeach??? just look at that old tree!!!

a simple fence Should do let us contribute!!!

Old Timer, I agree 100% with you on the meaning of that tree to the community and its visitors.

I still remember seeing pictures of the tree after Ivan and thinking to myself, 'All the leaves are gone and that tree is going to die. What a terrible shame.' Imagine my happy surprise when the next time I was in TB I saw it in bloom again.

So does a tree that withstands hurricanes need protection?

Are there any instances of the limbs breaking off from the weight of people sitting on it, etc.?

I ask out of curiosity...if humans have done damage, then it should be addressed. But if not, then it seems the tree is hardy enough on its own.

-Eric

Ah Cuz I buck up Miss Mary and Frankie them well after my school days.

I would always take a walk past it and marvel.

One side is dead and dried another still sprouts leaves and was giving seeds 10 years ago.

I look forward to starting many such trees for our descendants.

I agree, folks ought to stay out of the tree. They could get a nice picture without getting into it.

this may be coincidental but, i have written the jamaican national heritage trust about the big acacia tree in frenchman , i want it to be established as a nantional hreitage , it has been purported to be the widest acacia tree alive today, so it should be protected by the "jnht". it is well known around the area as a land mark to many well thinking people, visitors and residents alike,

so hopefully we can have it protected in the near future......

Nice Marlon. The only famous tree I can remember was Tom Cringles cotton tree which is no longer.

The National Trust would do a great service by declaring special trees protected national treasures.

This may encourage a more general protection of trees.

Hi Eric

I know from your many posts that you are a scholarly gentleman, not to be demeaning to anyone else of course, however i chose to answer yours, because you of all person have to appreciate, this question ? which is more destructive Hurricane or man ? hurricane is a renewal process, a part of the natural order of things, a cigarette butt could do in 1/2 an hour
what a hundred years of hurricanes failed to do!!

dont believe me?? ask one of the remaining old timers there-abouts, about the old tamarind tree
that used to stand at old wharf, it too withstood
a hundred years of hurricanes, and was felled in a single night, by a careless spark!!!

I was just a kid then, but i can still remember the sense of loss that i felt to see that old giant laying on its side, its trunk ravaged by fire, and i know i was probably not alone in that experience,

all opinions respected!!

I am just saying !!!!!!

respectfully oldTimer.

Short story here. I have several pictures of me and my wife at the tree. One time back here in Minnesota, I was getting my haircut at the local barber shop. As I sat in the barber chair, I noticed a calendar on the wall. I shouted "Hey, I know that tree!" Yup, there it was on a calendar for the month of September. I went back to the barber shop in October. They gave me the picture for September. It was a calendar for the coolest beaches in the world. Ssshhhh!
