For the fourth consecutive year, University of Virginia students are coming to Treasure Beach to assist in the schools.

These students are part of the U VA’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program. While other college students will be enjoying the “traditional” spring breaks, including all the partying, these students have chosen to be of service to others during this time period. The students have been earning money for quite awhile—and handle the full cost of their travel, lodging, and meals.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response they’ve had in Treasure Beach in the past several years, we are up to 36 students for this trip. The Treasure Beach trip is the most popular of all the ASB trips taken by the U VA students; the 36 lucky enough to be coming to Treasure Beach were selected from several hundred applicants.

Six of the students will be assisting at Sandy Bank Basic, and 30 of them will be assisting at Sandy Bank Primary. They will be doing everything from teaching students to working on a new playground at Sandy Bank Basic. At Sandy Bank Primary, they will be doing a huge amount including organizing the library to working with very small groups of students who need special assistance to helping Miss Zane prepare grade six students for the upcoming GSATs.

They will also be bringing school supplies with them. Plus, they’ll be bringing items for the Treasure Beach Women’s Group’s Rummage Sale. And, they have already made a generous donation to the scholarship fund for Treasure Beach Foundation.

So, they are all contributing whatever they can to the Treasure Beach community.

The students will be working in the schools from Monday, March 3 though Thursday, March 6. On Friday, they’ll be going up the Black River and then stopping at Floyd’s. (Everyone needs some time off!)

They’ll be staying in the Frenchman’s area. When you see them on the road walking to or from school, please be sure to give them a big, warm Treasure Beach welcome.

The students from the University of Virginia will be posting pictures of themselves interacting with the students from both the Basic and Primary schools after they have visited Treasure Beach. Also, each of the U VA students is going to write something about their personal experience.

In terms of helping the grade six students who will be taking the GSATs, the U VA students are going to do exactly as requested by Miss Zane and Mrs. Moxam. Miss Zane has already been working closely with those who will be sitting for the exams; she has asked for several U VA students to assist her, and she will get their assistance; if she needs more help, all she has to do is ask. These students are willing to do about anything they can to help out.

I will be returning to Treasure Beach next week as one of the students from UVA for the third consecutive year. I cannot wait to get back and see the children I have met in years past. It truly is amazing how much the children and Treasure Beach have grown since I began coming 2 years ago. Thank you in advance for the opportunity to work with the children and everyone in Treasure Beach's hospitality.

Hi everyone! I am the third site leader that will be accompanying Marcus and Sara and the 33 other UVA students coming to visit you this Saturday. I can not tell you how excited I am to be coming to Jamaica this spring break, and how much I am looking forward to helping tutor the students in your wonderful community. I teach swim lessons in the summer, and I have really missed getting to interact with children to help them learn. This will be my first time in Jamaica, and I can already tell it is going to amazing! Thank you for this wonderful opportunity, and I look forward to seeing you soon!
