My camera was destroyed about mid-way through my trip, so thank you (again) to Janet for lending me her camera so I could keep taking photos. Of course, then I got home with no way to read the memory card! I've finally moved enough into the modern world to realize I could buy a card reader (lightbulb moment!) ... so I've just uploaded the photos from my August trip. The pictures taken with Janet's camera have the wrong date stamp on them. (I thought I was turning that off, but clearly all I did was set my pictures back a month or so!)

FYI: We require anyone posting pictures to our Photo Gallery to reply to the automatic email sent asking that they have permission to show pictures in this public site from each of the people in the pictures.

hen we receive this confirmation, we post the pictures.

Hi, TBnet--
Still waiting for an email about my photos. In the meantime, I'm going to look into posting them on a photo-sharing site and putting the link up here so people have a chance to see the pictures.

Thanks!

I haven't written in a while. Got a little tired of always having to be contrary about one thing or another. But this thread interests me. I'd like to know when this rule about asking permission to post pictures went into effect. I ask because I've seen myself in a handful of pictures these last few months, and no one's ever asked for my permission before posting. I'm not interested in getting any of those photographers in trouble. I was willing to be photographed, and I know that a lot of photos find their way to this website. I liked the pictures and I was happy to see them, so it's no problem.

I guess I'm not sure what the real issue is. People who are uncomfortable being photographed generally don't allow pictures to be taken. Most of us know that visitors to TB like to post their photos here, so if people don't want to be photographed, they say so and the problem is solved.

This new (I'm guessing it's new) policy of asking people to say that they asked permission to show their pictures seems a little naive. Do we really believe that someone showing pictures of large groups of people has asked every single person in the picture for permission?

I understand that TB.net needs to protect itself and wants to respect the right to privacy of TB residents, and I respect those aims. I'm just not sure that this particular method is really addressing the issue. If 'girlgriot' writes back and says everyone gave permission to have their pictures on the website, but in fact NO ONE gave permission to have their pictures shown, how is the problem solved?

Tone

We started this policy several months ago as some people were not happy that they showed up on the web.

As for its effectiveness, its up to the person submitting the pictures to be honest about it. We have in fact not published pictures because there was not permission. But of course we can't police it 100% effectively.

If anyone sees a picture of themselves and want it removed, we will do so.

Tone I do not agree wiht you on your below quote

"I guess I'm not sure what the real issue is. People who are uncomfortable being photographed generally don't allow pictures to be taken. Most of us know that visitors to TB like to post their photos here, so if people don't want to be photographed, they say so and the problem is solved." Most people in Treasure Beach are very friendly and would not tell a visitor not to take their picture... they don't know you are posting their picture to the world.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy seeing the pictures but mention your intent when taking the pictures. OR just stop posting peoples pictures and post house and roads and sea...PROBLEM SOLVED.

Oh dear. I never thought my desire to post my pictures would turn into all this. I almost feel as if I should keep the pictures to myself ... not out of pique, but because the sharing is just supposed to be a nice, fun thing, not a reason for people to fuss with each other. Maybe I'll take Canada1's suggestion and post only the people-less photos.

Canada 1, you said: "Most people in Treasure Beach are very friendly and would not tell a visitor not to take their picture..."

I definitely agree that the people in TB are very friendly, but being friendly and asking someone not to take your picture aren't mutually exclusive. I have several friends in TB who have asked me not to photograph them, and others who have said I could photograph them but please not post the photos. There's nothing unfriendly about that, it's simply asking a friend to respect your wishes.

Tbnet, I have a question. What about the folks who post a link here that sends you to photos on another site? (I'm thinking of the excellent photos Amy posted and, more recently, of Stuart's pictures.) If the people in those photos didn't give permission, aren't their rights still being violated even if the photos themselves aren't showing up in the photo gallery here?

Seth, its a valid question. If such a case were brought to our attention and the person who was responsible for the page that the link pointed to was not willing to remove the pictures, we'd probably remove the link.
