Tropical Depression 16 developed on Saturday night south of the island of Hispaniola. It is forecast to become a tropical storm later today. When that happens, it would be named Noel (rhymes with "bowl").
As of 5 am Eastern Time Sunday, the center of T.D. 16 was located near 16.2 North, 72.1 West, which is about 165 miles south of Port au Prince, Haiti. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour. Minimum pressure is 1003 millibars. Movement is towards the west-northwest near 7 miles per hour.
The system is forecast to move in the general direction of Cuba over through Tuesday, bringing heavy, flooding rains to the large islands of the Caribbean (Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Cuba).
A tropical storm watch is in effect for the Cuban Provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantanamo. A tropical storm warning is in effect for the south coast of Haiti, from the Haiti/Dominican border westward to Port au Prince.
YUCK!
It is now Tropical Storm
NOEL
just in time for the x-mas season (:>)(:>)
I'm glad to hear the pronunciation. Since we pronounce our name no-EL (French for Christmas) we won't feel responsible for this latest intrusion. :-)
Although we are all watching Noel very closely, right now it looks like we, on the South Coast, will be missing the brunt of it.
Fingers crossed.
Just watching it and it looks like Jamaica is going to get spared totally. One can only hope.
Woke up to a beautiful sunny morning, thank God!
Let us keep those in the path of Noel in our thoughts and prayers.
Here's the projected path of TS Noel. Looks like JA is spared a pass over, tough heavy rains are forecast.
