Hello, My husband and I will be making our first trip to Treasure Beach in a few weeks. We have been to Negril several times, but decided to try something different for a few days this time. We will be staying at Jakes, and will only be there a few days. Does anyone have any recomendations of "must do's" and "must eat's"? Are there many places within walking distance from Jake's? Are there any close by "night spots" (and I realize that the night life in Treasure Beach is very laid back) Any info you can give me will be appreciated. Thanks, Pam

YS Waterfalls are just beautiful and a short drive from Treasure Beach. The bike tour down the Santa Cruz Mountains is also spectacular.

One of my favorite night spots in TB is Fisherman's Bar.

If you are here on Friday or Saturday, then you should stop at Delvin's for some fabulous jerk chicken, jerk pork and conch soup.

Right on the main road. Ask anyone in TB and they can direct you.

Pam - Some of the best meals my wife and I have had would be at Jakes. You can't go wrong eating there. Also, try Little Ochi, a short drive from Jakes. Right up the road from Jakes, you will find the best jerk pork and chicken around.

Definitely eat at Little Ochie's; avoid weekends if you don't like really loud music. YS Falls is gorgeous; it's close to Appleton so the two can make a good day together with the majority of your time at YS. Going to Floyd's Pelican Bar is a must.

Hi Pam
I have been to Treasure Beach many times and bought land there last year. Try the Sunset Resort Restaurant next door to Jake's. Kit is a great chef and the food is terrific. Go there in the morning and ask if their is fresh lobster. What a treat! I would also walk just to the other side of Jake's and go to Jack Sprat's for lunch or dinner. It is right next to a nice swimming beach for some good hang out time.
Be wary of the sea in Jamaica in the winter time. Don't turn your back to the sea in Treasure Beach. It is different than Negril.

Dinner at the Rose-Blue Bar at MAR BLUE in Old
Wharfe features some of the best and most innovative cooking on island. Sister Lu's
for bluecrab up Black River, The Riverside Dock
just across from Charlie Swaby's Safari Queen
River Cruises and Little Ochie in Alligator Pond for spicy fish/seafood are also 'musts'. If Ann
Lyons has put her Thai coconut noodle and ginger
soup and chocolate tart on the menu at Jake's, those, too, are musts, as are fresh bread and
sweet rolls hot from the oven at Heart of Love
Bakery.

Thank you for all your help. I have heard a lot about Little Ochi. How far of a drive from Jakes is it? About how much would be a reasonable cab fare? Also Ralph, are there any particular names of places up the road for the jerk? And Rebecca, is Frenchman's open all the time, or just on certain days/evenings? Is it within walking distance? Thanks again, we can't we to go

Pam

And lunch or dinner take away from the great cooking ladies at Diners Delite, a cookhouse down the hill from everywhere else recommended here.

We did the same as you, Negril for 16 years, a short visit to Treasure Beach and 10 years of staying at Jake's (we still go to Negril to meet friends after our Jake's stay but always decompress at Treasure Beach first).

A trip to Munro College at the top of the mountains is very refreshing as well as scenic. There is also Lover's Leap and a trip down the Black River for the alligators. The Pelican Bar due south from Jake's. The wild Onion (rebuilt last year)

You won't go wrong with any of the previous postings and recommendations. Little Ochie is about a 45 minute drive from Jake's through Southfield, Junction and ending at Alligator Pond (Web: www.LittleOchie.com). It's a beautiful drive over the mountains and lends itself to wonderful scenery especially if you go around 3PM and return while the sun is setting. Fare is around +/-$60 US. Morris (I believe he is at Tiffany"s now with his wife about 1/2 mile west of Jake's correct me if I am wrong) is the best and in addition to the breakfasts his ackee is the wonderful. Jack Sprat's can't be beat for the pizza, conch soup and curried conch. On Saturdays only you can get jerk pork and chicken as well as conch soup at M D Grocery about 1/4 mile east of Jake's. Another is the old Trans-Love (once again someone here will know the name [I think I'm dating myself])for fresh baked goods and breakfast. The various cook shops such as Blossoms are always interesting. And of course you will be at one of the best just eating at Jake's.

I'm making myself hungry just writing about this and I have to wait until February to do anything about it.

Bon appetit

Well, it looks like you better extend your stay!

The club's name is Fisherman's Bar and he is open 7 days a week.

Have fun!

Is the Wild Onion open? It was closed this past summer.

Pam
One other fun thing to do in Treasure Beach is to visit all the local markets for drinks, fruits like Jamaican grapefruits, nuts, buns to eat besides your meals. It is a good way to encounter the really nice local people on their own turf. On your way to Treasure Beach you will go through Black River if you come from Negril. Stop at the Black River Bakery and pick up coco bread and coconut cookies which are both awesome. Take freezer and sandwich bags in your luggage to TB and use them to store your food in your room. Ants are really in search of food here!

The road can be tough going, with many twisty-turvy hairpin/airplane turns that put 'the snake road' to shame, but an alternative shortcut from MoBay to TB will take you through NEWMARKET where
Fri and Sat one of the best country fruit/veg
markets can now be found. A truck from there
generally comes in to TB on Fridays.

Has Eggy rebuilt? If so, his bar is a definite stop for an ice cold beer on the beach.

Eggie hasn't rebuilt yet, but we are hoping soon!

Go Eggie! I had a great lunch with him last winter and hope to spend time there again this time. On a different subject,I've been meaning to ask: does anyone in TB make Patties? I've gotten them in Black River but hope for more local cooks to offer them.

Not directly in TB, but the Everything Nice bakery located about 2 miles out of TB does.

Pam - I don't know the name of the Jerk place I suggested - you walk out of Jakes and to the right up the road a short walk - it has a Shell Gas sign on the building, although they don't sell gas - it's a general store with jerk only on Friday and Saturday. I would also suggest the hunks of cheese they sell - good for a snack. This isn't anything fancy, but the locals and owner treat you like family, which is what we liked. Enjoy! My wife said you should try the conch soup too.

I also vouch for the jerk and conch soup. They also sell good wine.
