The banned season for lobster is April 1 - June 30. This is typically spawning season for the lobster which is why they choose this time for banning.

If lobster has been caught and frozen previous to April 1, then it will be available. If not, we ask that everyone respect the ban and not request lobster, so we and our children . . . can enjoy lobster for years to come.

During spawning season, lobster is not only illegal, the flesh is flaccid and mushy, so not good eating. Frozen lobster, whether home-frozen or imported from Honduras as served in many resorts, is a pale substitute for the real thing.
Opt instead for deep-sea/bongo/monkey crab -- to many, far sweeter than lobster -- or fresh-caught
river shrimp from Mandeville or conch
for fresh shellfish choices.

Hey foodie, I have often wondered about the toxicity of peppered shrimp, sold, for example, on the roadside roughly between Lacovia and Black River (I don't remember the exact location). My concern stems from the fact that this is a huge sugar cane area with a potentially large volume of fertilizer seeping into the water system.

Also how about seepage into the water table from the caustic soda pond outside of Mandeville created by the bauxite co's. and visible from the Mandeville bypass?

I wonder if anyone can shed some light here?

There were reports a couple of years back on the toxic run-off from Appleton processing plant into Black River;don't know if company fixed problem, or if same/similar problem exists in watertable/rivers up near Mandeville. I'd be more concerned with still-water, like tilapia ponds, than that that run fresh.

Talk to Len Parchment who's a great source adept at getting both deep-sea crab and river shrimp. He's at La Casa Duna on Billy's Bay. 398.6350 .Blue crab can also be found up Black River; and land crab in May,the latter normaLly curry crab backs with little or lots of stuffing. Dorrit's aka Oceanside Pub in Belmont/Bluefields on the route in generally does a 'Land Crab' festival of sorts in May.

Thank you for the response foodie. I go crazy for crustaceans but I'm always a little cautious.
