Dear Friends of TBWG,

It is with great sadness that I write to let you know that on the evening of Friday June 22nd the Treasure Beach Women’s Group house on Old Wharf Road was broken into and several items were stolen. No one was there at the time and the theft was discovered the following day when our Craft Shop Manager Mrs. Susan Ebanks arrived for work. We are communicating with the local police on this matter and are working with project partners and friends in the community to increase security at the center and replace what was lost.

The items stolen include: One Compaq Armada M700 laptop with Windows XP Microsoft Office 2003 and wireless capability, valued at $100,500 JA One small desktop fan, valued at $500 JA One combination radio/CD player, valued at $5,000 JA Misc. electronic equipment valued at $10,000 JA The structural damage caused to the building (one of the door jabs was hacked out) has been repaired and the group is going to be installing grills on the remaining three outside doors as well as locks and investigating the installation of a light sensor for the outside light, which will be turned on at night.

At this time the police have no leads as to who committed the theft. In many ways we count ourselves fortunate that more was not stolen. I am sorry to communicate such sad news to all of you, our friends and supporters, but rest assured that we are doing everything we can to recover from this setback.

Please bear with us while we go about replacing our stolen computer – as we will not have Internet access at the house for the foreseeable future, our replies to emails may be slow. BREDS has graciously lended the use of their cyber café for the duration and it is thanks to them that I am able to send you this message.

In friendship,
Lys Smith

Hey Rebecca,
Personal msg to you...
Looking forward to coming home to Doubloon in 16 days. I read this post and I am really sad about this. I was wondering is it just better to make a cash donation when I am there or would I have to pay duty up the ying-yang if I were to purchase a Cd/radio player and bring it with me.
Let me know...
Also is there anything we can bring for you as well from the good old USA...
xoxox
Lauren

I am very sorry to hear of this misfortune. The Women's Group Benevolent Society was one of my favorite and frequent stops between Great Bay and "town." I enjoyed many conversations with Ms. Susan and purchased lovely items to memorialize my holiday in Treasure Beach. I give thanks that no one was injured and I pray that material losses will be replaced with God's speed.

I'm so sorry to hear about the break in! I don't have money to donate just now, but I do have an old laptop that I'd be happy to donate. It's a Gateway that has Windows ME. No wireless capability, but it does have an ethernet card. It's far from top of the line, but it might be a useful on-site stop-gap until you can purchase a new one. I'll be coming to TB in a month and would happily bring the computer with me. Please let me know.
S.

It is really sad and upsetting to have learnt of such great lost. I hope the police will be able to gather vital information on this matter and let those useless culprit or culprits face up to their responsibility and action.

It might help if anyone heard or believe of any suspicious party/parties to come forward with such information as this would be an asset in bringing justice a shore.

I will be in Jamaica soon and look forward to contributing what I can.

This is such a sad thing to have happened to the Women's Group. Obviously, whoever broke in and took the items was interested in the monetary value of what they could get from stealing. They did not even stop to think that the TBWG provides necessary services for so many in the community. Then again, criminals are selfish people who do not care who they hurt.

I hope the word quickly spreads around the community and that someone will be able to give the police good clues as to who did this. Almost everyone in Treasure Beach is law-abiding, and the citizens must be highly embarrassed by this distressing turn of events.

HOPE THE PERSON/PERSONS WHO DID THIS WILL BE CAUGHT AND BROUGHT TO JUSTIC.THIS IS SUCH A GOOD PLACE FOR THE COMMUNITY BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER FOR GOOD CAUSES.

WHAT IS WRONG,WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE HEADS OF THESE THIEF/THIEVES, DON'T THEY LIKE TO SEE GOOD THINGS HAPPENING IN TREASURE BEACH.
SELFISH NO--GOOD HOODS, THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE.

WHEN AND IF THEY TRY TO SELL THESE ITEMS I HOPE THE ONES BUYING WILL HAVE A HEART AND RETURN THE GOODS TO THE TBWG WHERE IT BELONGS.BUYING FROM PEOPLE LIKE THESE MAKE YOU JUST LIKE THEM IF YOU WILLFULLY KNOW THE NATURE OF HOW THEY GOT THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.

GOOD LUCK ALL THE WAY.

Hey Lauren! Yes, I think cash would be the best and will save you carrying the player along and the hassle of Customs. You could even ask your driver to stop at the supermarket where you usually exchange $$ and right in that plaza is an electronics store where you can purchase the player.

Thanks so much for your usual thoughfulness.
