We are thinking about buying a plot of land to build a villa on in TB to live in for 6-7 months of the year, we have been there a few times and love it.
Can anyone who has done this allready offer any advice?
Any problems, things to watch out for, things i might not of thought of?

I have been thinking about doing the same(difference being I am weghing possibility of full time v. part-time residency). Please share info on this thread in the forum so that others may benefit from the info.
Depends if you want citizenship?6 months is the maximum time you can spend otherwise.
Apparently it takes a long time to get and alot of hastle and back an forth trips to Kingston.so i have been told.
what benifits it brings im not sure?
It also depends on whether you need to work to live there as if you do then theres probably not much work in TB.
I think we would miss the variety of food we are used to and we might possibly, but unlikely miss the cold of whare we are from!familly, friends, civilisation etc!so part time residency would be perfect!and it means we can take lots of stuff back to our friends in TB and our familly in the cockpit area!
Also for seeing the dentist and doctor at home i think would be another reason to stay part time.
Actually, Lisa, there are many good doctors and dentists in Jamaica. Maybe not in abundance in the Treasure Beach area, but not too far away.
And, "civilisation"?
Wonder what your definition is?
Dont take offence !
was just trying to say personally we would rather stay part time.
i suppose i used the wrong word civilization, i really meant just being in our home country some of the time and being with home comforts that maybe one might miss.
Jamaica is indeed Civilised in its proper meaning!
Dentists and Doctors.
In our country it is hard to aquire a new dentist/doc as there are waiting lists and i didnt know if it would be same in jamaica.
By civilisation i meant basicaly ,things you might be used to and may miss.
I am sorry for and misconceptions people may have had.
Irie
Whoa, Lisa! Did you really mean to write 'civilization'? I hope not ... or that you have some other meaning for it than the one I'm getting when I read it.
As a Jamaican, and one that lives in Jamaica I will tell you about some of the difficulties. It is far different being here on holiday, than actually living here. You have to be prepared to be phenomenally patient and be able to deal with a lumbering and ineffecient public services who have a great habit of losing important documents. There are great doctors and dentists but very badly equipped hospitals. Poor emergency responses in terms of fire brigades, police and ambulances. There is the crime issue of course, small though it currently is in T'Beach. There are regular water lock offs and electricity outages as the JPS continues their load shedding. Our social structure is very different that that of the US/Canada and Europe and takes some getting used to. You have to be open and at the same time be on your guard and aware. If you decide to build, be prepared to supervise every step of it yourselves and shop around for a reliable and TRUSTWORTHY contractor.
The thing to do would be talk to other foreigners who have moved here and ask them about their experiences.
But guess what I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I really never meant it in a bad way far from it!
I love Jamaica, Treasure Beach , and our familly in cockpit country, and i have huge respect for everyone!so truly no harm or offence intended!!!!!!
:-(
Have i been forgiven?
Civilization in Jamaica, spelt civilisation in USA. Same thing.
To no Z in USA,it is obviously a miss spelling!
Yo Lisa, no harm meant and none taken, so just CHILL. We all know that you used the word "civilization" in its casual connotation. Folks just relax and stop getting your undies all in a bunch! There are more substantive stuff to discuss like JA#1 just did. Irie.
@ No spell check on here,
why spell check ??
look up in Wikipedia and see that it is written with z in english,
so why the fuss???
For the record, British English uses an S, American English uses a Z.
This is the last post we're accepting on the spelling issue.
To JA #1,
Thank you for your serious response to my posting!Your advice is very helpfull!
we are planning to live in TB for six months of the year.
It doesnt put me off as no whare is perfect, i bet it is character building at times but all obsticles can be overcome im sure.
Lots of people have mentioned problems but everyone says its worth it which is very good, we thought it would be!
all advice is greatfully received.
Thankyou TBnet!
Irie
No prob, Lisa. I accept that you did not mean any offence.
It's just that some people from the "Developed" world do adopt a very condescending attitude towards "poor Third World countries" such as ours.
I accept, however, that there are many decent, well intentioned persons who have a genuine interest in Jamaica and wish to contribute to its development.
I take it, you are one of those.
To Puzzled,
we do have a genuine interest in Jamaica and we fully intend to contribute to its development.
we already help with funds towards our relatives in cockpit country for medical bills and bettering there land and building a shop for them to sell there goods and we plan to help with the local schools with books and uniforms and we also plan to help Kory with his fishing business.
I am just away to send LT some gardening things he asked for too!
We are extreemly decent people , very kind , honest and generous.
maybe when i next visit we can meet and you can see for yourself!
Kind Regards to you
Irie
