I need some help from those knowledgeable about banana trees. I have a couple out back and one has shot up a sucker. I want to give it to a friend but am not sure the best way to go about it.
Can someone give me some advice?

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, I know LT. However, I'm not in JA at the moment...if I were I would have asked my farmer friends the question :-) Unfortunately, none of them have email...
I'm looking forward to any info your gardener post brings. Thanks
Hi Eric,
I spoke to LT today and he is going to check his email tomorrow so email him at ltisculpture@yahoo.com
Hi Eric,
(Hi Lisa,
I wouldn't take the sucker of the bannana if I were you. When the tree flowers and fruits the main stalk dies and the sucker provides the next flowering stalk.)
this is the only reply if have had so far!
I transplant my banana's frequently (or give them away) and all I do is dig out the baby banana and when I replant I keep it watered. It would help if there was some fertilizer like cow manure or chicken manure...but the banana's grow great as is.
Happy gardening

How big should it be before I cut it off?
Does it need to shoot out its own roots, or will they grow once I cut it away from the parent?
I tried cutting another sucker off and it seemed to die pretty quickly.
Hi Eric,
I have a clump of bananas, so digging out a shoot for relocation or sharing is never a problem. Perhaps you are digging up a shoot that has not grown up enough...I would suggest waiting until the shoot has a good leaf, maybe a foot high. Dig deep to include the root. If the plant will be out of the ground for awhile, put it in a pot big enough to hold sufficient dirt and keep it watered. Hope this works for you.
Thanks for the advice. I'll give another shot and see what happens.
I lost all my banana trees in the
Great Bay flood of October 2005.
Too much wata.
Any tips on preventing this?
Thanks.Leonora.
