Hello all:
My 11 yr old daughter and I are looking for a small (1 bdroom is fine, 2 even better)very affordable cottage w/cooking facilities, preferably but not nessarily at either edge of the beach (Billy's Bay or Great Bay) We're on a limited budget as I travel a lot, and don't need a.c, tv, pool etc - just cleanlieness, privacy, very close walk to the ocean. We always hire local people for cleaning, some cooking, driving etc -that's where my spending happens.

Here's the problem that has kept us away for three years: we are very close to a local family with several children and two older teenage brothers. Last time there, we experienced friendliess toward my daughter and I, but great hostility from our landlord(s) (we moved because of it and encountered the same thing) because the three younger ones sometimes stayed the night with us and all of them played around our lodgings. (They destroyed nothing: they and my daughter are all exceptionally well behaved, honestquiet and polite. Nothing was ever missing) While folks were friendly to my daughter and I, at the time I swore never to return to Treasure Beach because my adoped children were insulted and chased away. We are longing see our young friends But I need a landlord who will be kind and welcoming to these local children. If there is such a person and such a cottage, please write to me ASAP so I can get a flight. I'm a responsible. middle aged professor who loved Treasure Beach before this happened.
Thank you

PS. What exactly is that scary school on the way end of the beach. It looks like a jail. Are the children there mistreated?

Hi, Andrea--
Hope you find a place to stay. I'm sure there are options. The cottage I rented when I was in TB last year was lovely, and no one seemed to mind if I had local friends come to visit. It's being rented long-term just now, though, or I'd suggest it as an option.

As for the 'scary school' ... that would be Tranquility Bay, the 'school' I refer to as the teenage prison. Do a search for it online and you'll find plenty of hits.

Good luck and hope you and your daughter are back in TB this winter.

Gayle

It is amazing how people in general perceive what they want to perceive without facts. There is no 'scary school' in TB. We the residents are aware of this. These are students mostly from
abroad, who are at a normal boarding school. They learn courses from the American Curriculum in a changed environment i.e. Jamaican. One would not expect the School to be open to the public where you just walk in and view as you like. Take it from us - it is a normal boarding school - where Students are taken care of and learn in a healthy, clean, well manicured, and organized environment. Also, from time to time some of the students do work in the community. As adults, especially educated adults, let us not jump on the usual band-wagon of perceptions, rather let us find out things for ourselves rather than jump to negativity. Also, remember it is not everything that we read that is gospel. Negative persons write, positive persons write, indifferent persons write, insane persons write, sane persons write - the point is what is written is affected by who we are.

The family at Shakespear Cottage are very nice, and their main house has bedrooms and cooking facilites, as does the small cottage. I believe most TB residents are loving, welcoming, and non-judgmental. jeanie

This is off the initial subject off a suitable place to stay for the initial poster.

However, I beg "Judge Not" to do some research into Tranquility Bay.

There is NOTHING normal about the school. It is FULL of controversy. There are many message boards on the net from victims of the "healthy, clean, well manicured, and organzied" environment of which you write.

There have been numerous SUCCESSFUL lawsuits against Tranquility Bay School, and if you have access to the internet and do searches, you can actually read transcripts of court testimony from SUCCESSFUL GRADUATES OF THEIR PROGRAM who have absolute horror stories to tell.

Unfortunatly, money talks, and it screams in Jamaica. That is the #1 reason (JOBS, TAX REVENUE ETC) that scary school is in our community.

Lennie at Irie Rest ( but I doubt Lennie will have a vacany during those dates) and the Lewis family at Shakespear would not trouble you for having local kids visit. I bet vikings House or Ital Rest wouldn't either.

The cottage at the back of Shakespear would be ideal(if it is available) I have stayed there twice. We had lots of local guests including kids.

They have some new rooms too.

Do you think decent Jamaicans would be working in a place like what you perceive my dear? Never, I can tell you that. Get real. Decent and law-abiding persons from the Community work there as well. Do you think persons would stand up to such things as you perceive - Never!! Maybe you should channel your energy into politics - that's where things are scary. I rest my case. Look at the roads in our Community - that's scary.

Take a swim at Panty Hole and cry when you see the Zombie eyes that are suggestive of induced
'tranquility'.

The individuals that have taken the Hippocratic oath and are aware of this situation should have another look at the oath as they have failed its intent.

As I too have failed to make time to shout
about this disgrace.

Poor children. Let them into the community with foster parents and see what love, caring and
enlightened discipline can do.

I wish 'Justice' would reconsider another alias name. It sure is not equivalent to what he or she
writes. Too negative at times. Anyway, that's your opinion. He or she needs to get facts.
