Thought you might like to see how the canal looked this morning after the storm.
You can see in the photo that work is being done on the building of the bridge. This is good news.
The person standing in this washed out section of wall is 6'2" tall. As we were there taking photos we hear and saw the water from above flowing into the canal like small waterfalls.
Just to clarify, the dirt you see in the canal was intentionally put in to stop the water from coming into the section where they are working on the bridge. This is not a cave-in.
Hey!... I know that person LOL. It is disturbing to see how much of the clay on the sides have fallen in after each shower of rain. Soon, unfortunately, there will be a major cave in. I am no fortune teller but it is inevitable.
Hope everything goes well!
I'm bringing my fishing line over there!
Justice; you wont catch any fish in that "4ft" of dirty water. Try the Great Pond, you will have better luck.
Thanks Cage.
Any land turtles left in the pond? They should be left alone to multiply now.
Don't the lily in Great Pond is supposed to be unique to the area?
Best wishes, Justice.
That dirt is going to cave in, for sure. Just look at it. It seems like a no-brainer to me. saturate that ground around it, and bye bye walls.
The Brits brought in Khus Khus (Vetiver) grass
to stabilise the roadsides in parts of St Mary.
Decades later most are still doing the job.
I called attention to these photos and the dialog to a friend of ours, Drake Wilson, who is a retired senior officer of the US Army Corps of Engineers (and who's going to be with us at Hikaru in February. I hope to arrange a tour of the canal project for him and others interested.)
Meantime, here's his reaction to the latest:

To give credit where credit is due, the construction phase of a new project is generally when it is most susceptible to damage. The erosion control measures have not yet been installed. They will need to slope the ground near the canal away from it, and the insides of the canal need gabions or rip-rap. Both are probably planned, just not yet done.

I am note sure about turtles in the Pond. Been there several times but never saw any trace of a turtle/ turtles. Maybe when you was a boy but not in this era. Lilies... sorry no lilies in the pond. There is a lot of grass on the floor though.
Wot..NO POND?
Ask Shirley and Vikes dem Baxter, we see them things in the last decade and whole heap of visitor would love fi see dem too!
Pancake or pond cake are the seeds of said rare water lily.
If we have something that is nowhere else in the world, I guarantee you I can find folks who either specialise in the item or are thrilled to see an ancient Jamaican.
Best, Justice.
Ah, Justice do indeed speak truth when he rap about pond, lily, turtles.
Where is Barbican?
Obviously you have not been to T.B lately. No turtles and no pond cake in Great Pond. FYI, as a child I too use to pick pond cakes. Both the green ones and the dry ones, I am not ignorant of the plant you are speaking about.
Maybe no pond cakes in Great Pond, but I have very fond memories of trudging knee deep through water and mud with Stuart and Shirley about a year ago at another pond in Great Bay. Our reward - getting to the pond cakes!
Having been a guest at Treasure beach fro almost 20 years I am not getting the geographical path of the canal . Where does it run from ? the pond to the sea through what path?
I had no idea that pond cakes are "nowhere else in the world".
Rebecca--
It's amazing you mentioned Gt. Bay. Always thought the area was not a part of the TB Connection (no one ever mentioned Gt. Bay before, it's always about Sandy Bank, Calabash Bay, Frenchman).
Barbican is in Kingston ItK.
Wet and cool now in the predawn.
No Baxter I have not been to TB for a while and I'm longing to come.
TB Too, Gt.Bay is always a part of T/Beach ..... Sandy Bank & Gt.Bay is UP-TOWN T/Beach while Calabash Bay,Frenchman,Billysbay is DOWN-TOWN T/Beach;why would newcomers know all of this:peace and goodwill to all.
Just a note on the "pancake" . The correct name is Lotus and it is native to Eastern and Central America.
The lotus is found in lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. It is also known as the Yellow Water Lily. It has yellow flowers and leaves that stand on 2-3 feet tall stalks.
It blooms from spring to summer. The lotus produces small fruits that are the size of a seed. The fruit is edible.
To TB too. If you search out the words Great Bay for this site, you will see many, many references.
Sorry you feel slighted. Please, please add Great Bay news to the site. We'd love to have your input.
