Hi ya'll.I wonder if anyone has any info.regarding clearing a car shipment from kingston wharf. The only thing I know is that it has to be '99 or newer.I really love my car and instead of selling I rather ship to jamaica.I come home three, four times per year and this would be handy.Any and every info.will be greatly appreciated.
99 ?
Thats beter than I thought / I thought it couldn't be over 5 yrs old.
I hear theykill you with the duty (heard you could buy the car for what they charge in duty)
From what I understand there is a 100% duty tax on the book value of the car as well as 16.5% GCT. You will need a customs broker to help you with all the legalities. I've heard nightmare stories about clearing vehicles, receiving them 3 months after they were supposed to arrive and then damaged and missing stereos. I would recommend you speak with a few people who have done this to hear of their experiences before trying it yourself.
Let me give you one word of advice...no matter how much you love a car, it will never be worth it to go through the bureaucracy, red tape, headache, bribery and corruption that is involved with this process. I am a Jamaican and have done it so I should know the 'runnings' but I tell you I would rather swallow nails than ever do it again. If you insist on having your car here...get yourself a good customs broker and even then it won't be easy. Do not...I repeat..DO NOT try and do it yourself. There is no-one that will tell you that this is an easy experience. One day I will write a novel on this experience.
One of our drivers had his brother ship a car out from UK to Kingston a few years back. The process/paperwork/shipment and clearance/take-delivery thru Kingston took about a year. He paid over double the car's "bluebook" value in fees, costs and duties. He swears that's also why he lost all his hair.
Years ago I wanted to bring my beloved corolla to Jamaica, but after researching the process I decided to sell the car in the states and spend the money here. I was able to find a very good replacement with just a little legwork and a lot less hassle.
Sounds like your better off just selling the car up here and just buying one in JA.
Thanks for all your advices.I'll definately sell it here and buy one in JA.
