HI JOHN I JUST SEE YOUR PROFILE ABOUT NEWELL SECONDARY HEIGH SCHOOL.ITS A GOOD IDEA TO HAVE A PAST STUDENT REUNION IN NEW YORK . THERE ARE A LOT OF PAST STUDENT THAT WENT TO NEWELL THAT LIVES IN NEW YORK WOULD LOVE TO SEE SOME THING LIKE THIS HAPPENED IT WOULD BE FUN.

I am not a past student of Newell, but I knew quite a few people who went there. I just wanted to add my two cents and suggest that this renunion be held at the school. This will give it more meaning. You will have the opportunity to relive moments, visit old haunts and be on a campus that you all spent most of your teenage lives. You could also consider making a contribution to the school, maybe to the auditorium, a scholarship fund, just to name a few, but do think of giving something back. A Reunion should not just be about connecting with old friends, try and make it more meaningful and beneficial to Newell.

Eric you have a point, we should really have one at the school and one in NY. Maybe we should also have some student from Purdue, Michigan, just to name a few, to help the students, when they go on spring break. I think that would be a wonderful thing.

We could all go back home to Newell for this historic re union, and as sombody in the audiance said this could also help the school financially.Mary I like the student association idea, but where would we have it.....New York, that's kind of centralize.

Certainly its a great idea for us to come together. Obviously there are large clusters of past students in New York,Toronto and of course in Jamaica who are likely interested in a reunion. Perhaps chapters of the past students association could be established in these places. Each chapter could have their own reunion but I would love to see all of us going back to the school where we met work and play together. I hope we can all put together and contribute something to the school. I am anxious to see something at the school named in honour of our first principal Mr.Chedda.

Personally I think it would be a great idea to have the reunion at the school in JAMAICA, reason being..we the ones that live abroad can attend in Jamaica, whereas the students in Jamaica may not be able to attend abroad because of visa restrictions and we would like everyone to have the priviledge.

To All the past Students while the idea of a school reunion is great not all of us can travel to New York , Canada ,England and Jamaica because of different reasons , some might be visa retrictions, some might can't afford to travel to Jamaica because of financial reason so having a Chapter in every country is great and maybe every two or three year or so , have a great Big one where it all started in Jamaica. The money that would be used for buying Plane tickets could go a scholarship found, My 2cents anyway. As a past student of Newell I think this is great.

Not trying to be discouraging to anyone wanting to have reunion in several places, but wouldtn't we want to see the past student that doesn't live near us? after all we could possibly see the people living close without a reunion. I say have it at the school!!! Having it all over the place would not be beneficial to the school or community. (eg. making contribution to the school for facility use. People in the community would be able to sell their homemade goodies like they use to, etc )
PS how would Newell Secondary benefit from us having a reunion abroad? Anyone?

This really needs to happen for the school, new chairs, new desk, painting, I was there in May and had a chance to visit, lets all put this into action before the Christmas holiday. For the people in Canada, how about November 25th,2006 for a date, a hall needs to be arranged, any good DJ's out here willing to donate their time. I can think of a good one, Kingsley P from Frenchman. A hall reasonable that anyone knows?

Where is Prof when we need him?
Someone has to be the head of this, someone to start the organizing, the DJ, the door person, refreshments to be sold.

This is indeed sad! A reunion is being planned and there are some people who selfishly want to have it in New York, instead of a location common to all past students from Newell. I have been following the various different postings and it does make you wonder, What kind of people did Newell send out into the world?. So selfish and self-centred and totally clueless about renuions, obviously! I could add more, but I will just leave it at that!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Lurker on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 - 12:53 pm: Edit Post

As an impartial observer, here's what I've observed in the posts here:

1) Many people want to have a reunion.

2) Some have said that it makes sense to have more than one since not everyone can travel

3) A couple of people are getting directly involved by deciding on a meeting place

4) Others are complaining that those people are taking over the reunion.

Conclusions:
1) Most people don't really (i mean REALLY) read the full text of what people post, thus leading to confusion

2) Before you complain about something here (or anywhere!) make sure you understand what has been said.

3) Those who are ready to make it happen should go full speed ahead. Unfortunately, you're never going to satisfy everyone.
Good on you for trying to make a difference!

How about a competition? Since there already seems to be so many competing ideas on where and when, I suggest reunions hosted by chapters in New York, Toronto, Florida, and Jamaica and the winner raises the most money for the school in Newell. Everyone wins.

There are many people that never attended Newell School, however, they have niece's nephew's or some sort of family relationship therfore they would support the cause. This is all for a good cause! SO OFF WE GO! looking forward to the amount of money raised, to help the less fortunate.

Guys, there is a national association of (Jamaican) past students associations in the USA.
It might be useful, after you have established your various chapters, to get in touch with that group.
It has already built an impressive network and would be able to provide valuable advice.

Obviously this audience is very intelligent and possess a lot of ideas, and on the contrary there are those who are infected with negativity.
SAD INDEED> be more rational we need your im put, we expect to have chapters all over the world, this is the only way we are going to rase enough money for the reunion at NEWELL.
Audience please avoid negative comments, this is about progress for Newell School, lets move positively forward. LURKER> thank you well said it is all about interpretation.
For those of us in New York and surrounding areas, please introduce a date and time to the forum...We need to stop talk and take action, what about a date in November. I need to have a date to secure the meeting place in Brooklyn, if some body in the New York area have a location in mind, please come forward.

I think it is a good idea to have a chapter in all the mentioned places. However (if possible) the inaugural renuion should be held Jamaica.

I noted a newspaper advert for the 150 year week celebration of Munro College, not all events will be held in St. Elizabeth, but still in Jamaica.

Although I am not a past student of Newell Secondary School, however as a young girl growing up I remember hearing so much about its Headmaster; Mr. Chedda, if I am not wrong he was either its first headmaster or the longest serving one. May I suggest that wherever this renunion takes place, Mr. Chedda be invited as the guest of honor.

Please let us lend our support to this magnificient idea, it can only be for the better. At the end of the day, Newell Secondary School will come out the winner and the benefits will be reap by the communities children.

I agree 100% with "Sad Indeed." A reunion is being planned. Some people dont think, they just say keep it in New york. Most people who went to Newell Secondary School still live in and around the area. I went to Newell Secondary School and I wont be going anywhere else for the reunion except Newell. I can go any part of the world it is kept, but I will only go to Newell. Please think positive and leave "Sad indeed" alone. Thank you very much "Sad Indeed"

As a suggestion, if you opened a new thread with the title of "NY Chapter of Newell OldBoys/Girls/Alumni/whatever term you care to use", then it may cut down on the confusion over what you're trying to do as well as the clutter that has accumulated in this thread.

Perception is a helluva thing especially when we are unclear in the manner in which we communicate. As I re read the entire forum, it is not out of the question for anyone, intelligent or otherwise, to have perceived that there were some persons who wanted the reunion at Newell and some who wanted it overseas. It is clearer now that there are individuals who would like to have Chapters as opposed to a Reunion. We as a group of persons communicating need to be clear and admit that at times we have mislead people with our own perceptions. Each opinion is important and should be respected. We should also accept that sometimes communication is unclear and all we need to do is make it clearer, that is what to my mind 'Lurker' did. This individual did not come across as nasty but objective. Please go ahead and plan your reunion, I wish you all well. I did not go to Newell and so I was only interested in developing my community and a school that has turned out some brilliant graduates. All the best to you all!

Hi fellow Newellites,

Sounds good so far. Arthur told me about this forum and I must say I am pleased with the enthusiasm shown to date. Quick question; has anyone contacted the school or the local chapter of the past students' association (PSA)? I know that up to earlier this year there was a functioning PSA. Mrs A. Stephenson a senior member of staff was working with the PSA. We will definitely need to communicate and coordinated things with the local chapter especially regarding the reunion in Newell.

Peace

Fellow Newellites,
I thank you for the interest you have shown in the Newell High School. There is a an active Newell High School Alumni Association that was formed in April 2006.

The Executive Members are as follows: Eric Morrison (President), Darin James (Vice President), Paulette Phillips (Secretary), Amos Parchment (PRO), Cassandra Powell-Smith (Asst Secretary) Eric Mullings (Treasurer), (Coopted Members) Veniece Rodgers-Crossdale, Rankine Wright, Donavan Wiliamson.

We welcome the formation of the various chapters around the world and hope that we can work together for the development of the school.

Previously, we had a Family Fun Day which enabled us to sponsor the School's Senior Football Camp from July-August 2006.

The Association will be having a Grand Gospel Concert on Saturday, December 2, 2006 starting at 6:30 pm at Newell High School. Proceeds from this event will go towards the Newell High School's Library Fund.

As many of you may know that the Library lost many of its valuable books in a fire years ago. The Library is in need of books hence the decision to have this function.

In 2007, the Alumni Association (Jamaica Chapter) is planning on having a Re union in the form of a Banquet. During this Banquet we plan to have the launch of the Alumni Association and honour at least Three (3) outstanding Teachers, current students and past students. We welcome your opinion and participation in deciding on the best suitable date/time for this event. We would like to see as much persons as possible at this event.
I close with our 'old' School's motto that we must, "Unite and Build"

Eric Morrison
President
2006-2007

I have finally gotten the chance to read this whole thread and I have seen some very good proposals that need to be put in ACTION.
If we talk the talk we must walk the walk...all talk and no ACTION wont get us no where.

In order for a Reunion to take place we all have to come together and agree and in order to do that we will have to form Various CHAPTERS.
We also need to respect each other opinions and find a common ground where we can make decisions about the Reunion.

IMHO the best place for the Reunion will be at the school....but in order for that to happen we have to form commitees aka Chapters wherever we are in the world.... You dont need a whole lot of people to start a Chapter.

Also while Sandy Bank School might need help this is Newell School that we are now dealing with and also Sandy Bank School is/was not the only school that students came from to go to Newell so if we start talking about other primary school then we would we opening up more can of worms so to speak and then we would have confusion left right and center.

So lets focus on the school at hand Newell Secondary.
thats my 0.2 cents for now

I am planning to be there and I am really looking forward to meeting a lot of old friends and meeting new ones too. Please post the main activities planned as soon as possible so those of us attending can start getting ready to participate. I have special interest in a cricket match, football and dominoes.
We work hard, life is short so let us take a while to get together and celebrate one of the most important events of our lives. I encourage other past students to post their ideas as well as questions on the subject. What can be nicer than getting together with old school mates to recognize our beloved school, have fun and help the school to grow ?
