Twenty-five youth from the Treasure Beach area participated in an exciting 2-week arts summer camp this August. The children, who ranged in age from 10 to 16, were offered an array of arts activities, which they dived into with gusto.

Dancer/teacher Tiffany Ciccarelli travelled from Brooklyn, New York, to teach daily classes in Hip Hop dance. Local fabric artist Judy Sauls taught applique, and assembled the squares the children made into a beautiful quilt which will hang in the Women's Center. Camp organizer Jeanne Genus taught paper mache, using balloons as the basis for creating masks, which the children designed and decorated. The creators of these masks, very original and grotesque, wore them in the final mask procession at the end of the performance that was the culmination of camp.

Campers were also offered claywork, beading, collage, acrylic painting, theater and music. Joan Green, who returned again this summer from Cambridge, Massachusetts to teach at the camp, taught painting, collage and theater. How did treasure Beach get it's name? and what is the real
treasure of Treasure Beach? these questions inspired two skits, a chant and a group poem, performed on the final day to an appreciative
audience of family, friends and community members.

Camp also benefitted greatly from the assistance of Canadian volunteer Katy Anderson, local youth counselors Adelisha Parchment and Miriam Wong, both of Great Bay. "The children of Treasure Beach include many with strong talents in the arts. It's a pleasure to teach these kids. They
show their appreciation of what is offered to them, they work hard and they are extremely creative. I have enjoyed the experience enormously.", said Joan Green.
