At the end of March 2007 my wife and I are celebrating 25 years marriage and have always longed to visit Jamaica but not the locked in experience of the resorts. Treasure Beach sounds perfect. As life long lovers of ska to reggae we really want to visit the legendary recording studios in Kingston, for example Studio 1. What is public transport like,we dont want to drive, or are there any excursions? We are on a limited budget- any recommendations for accomodation would be welcome. We are travelling from U.K. -what would be best airport to arrive at and cost of travel from there to Treasure Beach?. Many thanks, hope you can help.

Hi there,we have been visiting TB from UK for about 3 years, and have always flown to KIngston from Manchester via Gatwick with BA.The flight is good and is £500 upwards depending when you go.I may be wrong but I think around then is the cricket in West Indies so flights may be quite full.( I'm sure if I'm wrong someone will say!!)This time we are using Thomson who fly direct to Mo Bay.The big problem with Kingston is that its' 2.5 to 3 hours drive and the ride is a mostly bumpy one...but fun with a couple of stops for coconut water and fruit! Mo Bay is a shorter ride of about 2 hours. We have stayed at 4 places..Jakes,Folichon,Herons Reef and Coconut Cottage.I loved them all...all different but near to Frenchmans.TB is very beautiful..the people and the place and we wouldn't go elsewhere now but it is quiet and you must travel to see other places. We have had friends of ours take us places and we have paid.£100 from the airport for instance but it's always worth it.Eating out and drinks are good value but you will spend on travelling.I love YS Falls,Port Antonio,Pelican Bar and the amazing fish restaurant at Alligator Pond...I can't for the life of me think of the name....tiring day ..sorry.Everyone on here will tell you where they love...go...you won't regret it ever...there is a brilliant range of accommodation on this site and Rebecca is a great help.

Have you looked at the where to stay section? TB has lots of budget places to stay. I have stayed in (twice each) and would highly recomend Irie Rest (Billy's Bay), Vikings House (Great Bay), Shakespear Cottage (Frenchmans). All 3 are clean, safe , comfortable, inexpensive and are run by very nice people.

Pelicans Reach looks awesome / great spot on the beach.

the best airport would probably be Montego Bay (approx. 2 hrs drive), costs you approx. 120 US one way. Once there, you will easily find transport to Kingston, not sure about prices...e-mail me if you need contact numbers ...
There are a lot of possibilities for reasonable accommodation, just have a look on the "where to stay" section. you would have to decide what sort of accommodation you would prefer, hotel all inc, guesthouse or self catering...

Public transport is an "adventure" for sure, but you can get to Kingston from Treasure Beach that way.

Other options would be to hire a private driver (current going rate would be about $160 US plus a bit more depending on how long you want to spend in Kingston).

Also, you could rent a car and do the drive yourself, expect to pay around $60 US per day for the car, depending who/where you rent from there may be a deposit "hold" on your credit card. (Though if you rent from the smaller local operations that isn't done).

Here is a link to some of our past guests trip report with photos(they too were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversery here in Treasure Beach)

http://webhome.idirect.com/~pcarter/25th

The best airport to arrive into is Montego Bay airport, cost for a driver from there to Treasure Beach is usually $120 US.

Check out our website for place to stay also,
www.ItalJamaica.com
or just look at "where to stay" link, Great Bay area and click on "Viking's"

Feel free to email with any questions (just click on our name in the top line of this reply)

I would say it would be best to fly via Kingston, and combine your touring with private transport on either leg of your trip to TB. Trasportation can be a major portion of your vacation budget! Public is not really good for most tourist(IMO ) Many Great, Affordable , places to stay in the area.

I stayed at Golden Sands and it was inexpensive, clean and the owner and staff was very friendle. I can add that to the list of recommendations.
