I was wondering if anyone has encountered any problems with Jamaican Immagration upon entering Jamaica?
Here is the problem an aquaintence is currently having. Upon entering Jamaica this person was told they could only stay in Jamaica for 3 months but could apply for an extension. This person did not have a return ticket out of Jamaica and was told to have a ticket out of Jamaica when applying for an extention after 3 months. This person plans on staying in Jamaica beyond the 6 month max a visitor can stay.
Any ideas or comments on this would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is jahter@yahoo.ca
Thanks Terry

This is not an immigration problem , it is your friends problem, as he or she should check this out before travelling. First and foremost when you are travelling to any country at all and it is not your country of citizenship you have to purchase a return ticket, your friend should have bought an open ticket that's good for a year and on returning call the airline ahead to make a reservation so he would have a seat coming back. If your friend had a return ticket you may never know things would have work out much easier he might would have gotten a longer stay and it would be easier to get an extension. It is just like visiting the USA, you only get 6 months to stay and you must have a return ticket or they would think you are going to run off or they might not let us enter at all, so your friend have to just count his blessing. The trip is going to cost him more than he bargain for, because he will definately have to buy the ticket first and not knowing how much longer his extension will be. One thing I got to say is Jamaican immigration ease you up more than, US immigration, and this is something we should ask our travel agent, this is why they are there for us. Well I hope it work out for your friend. Good luck. In the US you also ge finger printed when entering.

I agree with TB Girl. Even though your friend planned to stay for an indefinite period of time, he or she should have made better arrangements before leaving for JA. An open ticket sometimes costs a little more, but it's worth the expense for the trouble it can save you with customs. Some airlines will even let you change your return date on an open ticket. Having no return ticket makes you look like you're planning to ignore the rule about staying for only 6 months. And yes, other countries (US and Britain for example) are much stricter about this sort of thing. I wish your friend luck.
