Treasure Beach Foundation is delighted to announce the winners of the scholarships for 2006.

Because the 10 finalists were so well-qualified, we had a lot of trouble making our decision; in fact, our Board has had several meetings of several hours each. And, because these finalists were so excellent, we decided to give five, rather than three, scholarships. Our first-place student will receive a full scholarship, and the four runners-up will each receive a half-scholarship. These scholarships will be applied to school fees (tuition), books, transportation, lunches, and uniforms for the full grade seven school year. The “catch” is that each of these students must maintain good grades during the school year. In addition, to pass on the tradition of learning, we are asking each of them to find a student outside of their family—and tutor him or her for the full school year.

As an important extra, we want to be able to assist each of these students as they continue their education. Therefore, assuming they do well in grade seven, we will also help them financially in grade eight. We do not yet know the level of this continuing assistance because we cannot commit to more money than we are able to raise. Plus—we will be awarding scholarships to more students who will graduate from Sandy Bank Primary School in 2007 as they go on to high school. So, this program will get larger as we go from year to year.

Now, with our heartfelt congratulations, here are our 2006 scholarship winners. When you see them, please take the time to congratulate them. They worked unbelievably diligently to achieve what they did. And, we wish them every success for the future!

First Place: Full Scholarship

Mejana

MEDERANA (“MEJANA”) WILLIAMS
High School: Hampton School

Mejana said: "Mrs. Kennedy, other members of the Scholarship Plan, I would like to express my sincere gratitude. In advance of the scholarship I am entitled to go to one of the best schools in Jamaica. Without the scholarship; however, I would not have been able to do so. But thanks to Mrs. Kennedy and the Scholarship Plan I can do so. I thank you all sincerely. I will continue to do the best I can so that one day I will be able to become a doctor or an actress and I too will be able to help the less fortunate. Thank you all once again."

Runners-Up: Half-Scholarships

Dave

DAVE LLOYD
High School: Munro College

Dave said: "First I would like to thank Mrs. Kennedy and the other sponsors for giving me the opportunity of being a recipient of this scholarship. I feel honored to be one of the recipients of the scholarships awarded.
My family is happy for me getting the scholarship because it is a big help with my school fee. They are also proud of me for my accomplishment. I am also happy that I have made my teachers, fellow students and the members of my community proud. This scholarship has motivated me to even work harder and I will endeavor to do my best in the future. After attending Munro College I would like to pursue a career in computer engineering."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Pierce

PIERCE TAYLOR
High School: Manchester High

Pierce said: "I am very honored to receive a scholarship and I am proud to know I worked hard. I am also very excited. I hope to go on to pursue a career in doctoring after leaving Manchester High School.

I would like to do the same for some children some day, so I say special thanks to Mrs. Kennedy and all the other persons who make it possible and for making me one of their choices. Thanks to my principal, Mrs.
Moxam, and my teacher, Ms. Zane, for recommending me."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Donald

DONALD ABRAHAMS
High School: St. Elizabeth Technical High

Donald said: "I would like to tell you thanks for awarding me with one of your scholarships. My family and I are grateful to you. When I leave STETHS I would like to become a bank manager or an archeologist. I would also like to leave with eleven subjects. Once again thank you."
+++++++++++++++++++++++

Adrian

ADRIAN DIXON
High School: Black River High

Adrian said: "I am very happy that I was given this scholarship before I heard that I got it, I was wondering am I going to get one. Now that I know that working hard in school can bring success and I will continue doing my best, just hearing that I'm getting it just sends a thrilling smile on my face which just wants me to shout out 'Yes!' Thanks to everyone who helped in giving the scholarship.

After I leave Black River High School I'd like to go to University to study Business because I would like to be a business man in God's will. There's two special things that I have learn't that are to be remembered at all times. 1. Don't listen to people that say you can't do this or do that just try and once you know you've done your best everything will be alright. 2. Whatever you put in your work the percentage come out."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And, on behalf of Treasure Beach Foundation, I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Norma Moxam and Miss Zane Ebanks of Sandy Bank for all their efforts in helping to make this scholarship program a reality.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Jamaica which included one week in Treasure Beach. Congratulations to all the graduates of the Sandy Bank school, and a special congratulations to the scholarship winners. I would like to encourage all those reading this to contribute what you can to the scholarship fund. We had ben in touch with Mrs. Kennedy as well as Mrs. Moxam, and were happy to donate to this cause as well as bring school supplies in our luggage for the Sandy Bank Primary School. We had a delightful visit to the school and were invited to stroll through the classrooms. The animated second graders were willing to pose for us (see gallery).

For anyone who has never traveled to Jamaica, it's hard to put into words the impact of the tremendous poverty on this island, juxtaposed with the positive and generous spirit of the Jamaican people. Complete strangers throughout the country went out of their way to help us, without expecting anything in return. Everyone made time to talk with us and treated us with respect and made us feel so welcome. A special thank-you to the Genus family of Ital Rest. Jim - I'll be back one day for our Scrabble tie-breaker!

Congratulations to Sandy Bank for turning out such great students. There are more than 50 with one teacher in grade six. That is a very difficult way to teach.

Congratulations to the scholarship winners. The photos above show that they are ready for high school. I advise them to think of the scholarship as a stepping stone and to take full advantage of the opportunities it offers. High school is not easy but it is nothing to be worried about because you guys have experienced working hard.

I am taking this opportunity to send greetings to the Sandy Bank Primary staff and students. Hi Abby-gaye! I just want to wish you good luck in the 9th grade. E-mail me sometime. Tell the other Hampton girls hello for me.

Congrats again to the scholarship winners and to the people who made it possible.
