Treasure Beach Foundation will be awarding scholarships to several exceptional grade 6 Sandy Bank students going on to high school this fall. These are competitive scholarships, awarded to some of the most promising students as identified by Mrs. Norma Moxam, principal, and Miss Zane Ebanks, grade 6 teacher.

Depending upon which high school a student attends, the costs for school fees, books, school supplies, transportation, uniforms, and lunches ranges from about $1,250 to $2,750 (U.S.) per year. This is very expensive, especially in a community like Treasure Beach where most families must use their earnings for the basic necessities of life such as food. So, the scholarships will make a very meaningful difference in the lives of those who win them.

Our aim is to assist the most dedicated students in achieving their potential so they can give back to the community and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

The scholarship winners will be selected on a variety of factors including the student's scholastic standing and the student's possible future contributions to the community.

This year's finalists are:
* Donald Abrahams
* Dacia Delon
* Adrian Dixon
* Odane Hill
* Dave Lloyd
* Petagaye McCollum
* Nikita Parchment
* Secina Parchment
* Pierce Taylor
* Mederana Williams

The winners will be announced after the students' GSAT score results (one factor in who will receive the scholarships) come in at the end of June.

Treasure Beach Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, meaning any contribution you are kind enough to make is tax-deductible under U.S. IRS rules. Your check should be made out to Treasure Beach Foundation and mailed to:

Thank you in advance for any amount you are able to donate.

Thank you for posting the names of the finalists. Joe fondly remembers each and everyone of them. How many scholarships will you be able to award?

Karen, I think what you are doing is wonderful. You can't ever put too much emphasis on the importance of a good education.

From a life long educator and TB Peace Corps Volunteer,
Patti Shannon

Our intention is to award scholarships to three of the finalists. Plus, we want this to be an ongoing program so we can do things year after year, not only for 2006. So, what we will be able to do will depend upon how much money we are abble to raise. Every donation -- in any amount -- will help.

I can't think of a better way to thank this incredible community for the friendship and love that they have provided us during our vacation getaways than to support the youth of Treasure Beach. The Foundation's efforts to give to the future through it's support of the youth of the community is to be commended...and SUPPORTED! Our check is in the mail, Karen, and I'm counting on ALL the other visitors to Treasure Beach who have been given the blessings of Treasure Beach's friendships to make sure that this is a program that will succeed and will last. And... the best of luck to these bright young people!

We are getting a very heartwarming response to this program, thanks to all the people who want to give back to the Treasure Beach residents because of how wonderfully they've been treated while in Treasure Beach. One of the biggest surprises was a check from one of the University of Virginia students who already "gave" to Treasure Beach by spending his spring break tutoring students at Sandy Bank (instead of participating in the "usual" partying that so many U.S. college students spring breakers do).

Also, to answer a question that I received via e-mail, there is no minimum donation. Your check in any amount will help make the scholarship fund go farther.

What a spectacular concept! The Treasure Beach Foundation's mission to award educational schlorships to the wonderful children of Treasure Beach is so long overdue. In today's world and especially in Treasure Beach - without an educational degree- its so difficult for these children to have the chance to reach for the stars and their dreams. I commend and honor TBF for providing such a wonderful gift to these very worthy children. We will be sure to send our donation to TBF asap. Knowing our donation will go directly to the children of Treasure Beach to provide them an opportunity to further their education, is such a worthy cause - count on our support!!!!

This scholarship fund will transform the lives of some very deserving children. These kids are smart, hard working and well mannered. All they need is the opportunity to prove themselves. When these kids become successful they will also give back to the community, so this program will have a very positive and long-term impact.

Joe
