Gleaner Article

Thanks Earl Moxam for keeping us updated and staying on top of the progress being made (albeit slow progress) on this project.

Wish I could say with certainty that the timetable set out by the NWA will be met.
Unfortunately, however, I cannot.

There is, therefore, a continuing need to be vigilant and keep reminding the authorities of this matter.

There are many other communities demanding attention as well.

So, they are going to START the canal at the BEGINNING of the hurricane season?
How long is this project slated to last?
Hopefully this year the season will start late to accomodate them.

This is the same song we heard for the past 2 years, I definitely think the media has done itself some injustice by publishing this article again for the almost 21st time.

I am not sure if anyone read the fable “The Boy Who Cry Wolf”, By Aesop.

I did read "The Boy Who Cried Wolf".

In this case, however, the wolf has, on every occasion, been very real and has visited us without fail over the past four years!

It is not the community's fault, therefore, if those who should respond to the cry do not.
I prefer to keep the issue in the face of the authorities. Keep reminding them of how long the problem has existed:

'In the meantime, residents of affected neighbourhoods in Treasure Beach are growing increasingly apprehensive at the prospect of another hurricane season with the threat of more flooding. "We are particularly disappointed that the long-awaited solution has not yet been implemented," said George DeLeon, convenor of Citizens Alert Group of Treasure Beach'.

'Reflecting the frustration of residents, however, Mr. DeLeon said that his group was in "a militant and purposeful" mood, as it awaited final word from the Government on the project'

'Attempts to get the Government to address the problem of flooding associated with the ponds in Treasure Beach date back to 1986.'

I am happy that I have the opportunity to write such stories on behalf of the community.

The cry of wolf coming was sent months ago when the roads from Pedro Plains Police Station to Great Bay was promised to be fixed. Since then nothing has been done more than dropping marl into a few of the pot holes and not fixing the worst section of the road.
So as Mr Buchanan " Community Watch Dog" for Treasure Beach I expected nothing more than what was written by one of our own son of the soil, Mr Moxam. How can he drive on the roads and turn a blind eye on it and not write about the bad roads.

The article was written after the residents threatened to block the roads if nothing was done. Today they blocked the roads and will continue to block it until the road is fixed and the canal built.

Dont be fooled by the promises as mr Shaw promised the road would have been fixed months ago on "Your Issues Live" on TVJ at STETHS months ago and nothing has been done.

We have come to be fooled by these politicians and their cronies far too long. Its time they get out and get out fast. We are not children to have them promised us sweets and cannot deliver it.

Am sure that when its near election that Mr Buchanan will come big up himself and have it done.
One critic of the demonstration from Great Bay (sadly) say they should pray no hurricane comes to flood the area and stop demonstrate. Yet she forgets that the God above helps those who help themselves.

ALERT!!!!!
Expect the roads to be blocked again during this week. If you have to go outside the community for work or business please do so early each day. As promised the roads in Treasure Beach will be blocked again.

We were promised that the equipment (Trucks, Tractors etc) would be in the area and work would have commenced on Monday, May 1, 2006. To date nothing has arrived or been done.

Is this how we want to sit down and take the incompetence of these people to make promises and not fulfilled them? Am surprised to see the dust from the marl on the road going into the Ward's and Henry's houses.

Treasure Beach wake up and come out and support the road block which will be bigger and better than the one last week. Sorry I cant say the day here but check your neighbour as he/she may just know the day. See you at the road block.

The digging for the canal started yesterday! And none too soon as the rains have started this morning.

Hi Rebecca-
Does this mean the project will be completed? I mean, is there a possibility that they'll start, and not keep working - blaming rain? Are they usually pretty good about finishing, once a project has begun? I sure hope this is finally it!

Hip hip Hurray!

When they finish there, can they start on the roads?

The roads were being worked on (going in to Great Bay) when I was there last week.

If the blocking and bawlingout worked I should eat my hat.

I hope that those with responsibility for roads etc will be eventualy able to post repair and construction schedules which will assist long term planning and encourage ventures related to these facilities.

It is hoped that the various departments involved do not find it necessary to claim some kind of divine right to conceal their activities from the public. Hopefully the lack of communication and response is due more to "no monee" than contempt for the public.
